Default JL 10w7 VS MTX 9500

im looking to install a 10' sub in my 04 Z. I have been looking at the w7 for a while now. Ive planned on running it with the JL 500/1 sub amp because the "recommended" wattage for the 10w7 is 500rms.

On the other hand ive got a friend who works for an mtx dealer. He swears that the 9500 is the best sub out there. He wants me to get the sub and run it on a 1000 watt mephis or mtx amp. He swears that it is going to have a much better sound quality than the w7. but he also says that its going to be about a minimum of 2k for the amp/sub/and custom sub box.

Now am i crazy or does taht just sound like entirely to much money? I can get the w7 and the amp for about 7-800 brand new.

Now price aside, what setup do you think is the best sounding in the Z. Now if the 9500 is the best setup, is it worth the cost?

Also, im looking for the best sound quality, not the biggest boom

MTX should be a less expensive setup.

JL 10W7 should cost around $470
JL 500/1 around $400

MTX T951044 should cost around $350
MTX TA7801 around $470

I personally like the sound of MTX subs, thats why i have em. I'am running two 9500 10's. The SQ is beautiful. only downfall is the mtx subs are very heavy. 50 pounds each.. Best bet is to listen to both subs and see what you like better. both subs are excellent.

Why not audition both and deside with your ears and your music which you like best. I like an honest speaker to hear what the recording artists wanted. What is good for the classic rock and prog rock I listen to wouldn't be good for hip-hop which tends to distort the bass by +20 dB or more.

The amplitude difference between that 500 watt and 1000 watt amplifier is just 3 dB. To gauge how much that is most people will not hear a 1-2 dB difference but will notice a 3 dB one. Some home stereos have click volume control ***** - each click is 3 dB normally. So to get a 3 dB gain with your amplifier you've got to double its size. Getting a more efficent speaker element or putting the speaker into a proper size box will get you more results on the cheap.

ive listened to both subs and i honestly cant tell the difference. but i listen to them in the classic shop that has a room filled with different subs/speakers/amps/hu's all over the wall. So i just wanted to get peoples opinion on them actually in the car. I will be questioning the price today on the sub and amps from mtx because after i posted i started looking at price and really couldnt understand where he was coming from

so honestly, no "you should find out yourself," would yall take a w7 or a 9500 set up? remember, quality of bass, not amount. I listen to rock if that helps as far as the sound i listen too

can't go wrong with the w7 and 500/1. I have the same amp and sub setup and the bass is clean, tight, and can play deep and loud when you want it too for both rock and rap. i think it blows the competition away. I've had many different subs in my cars (kicker, mtx, eclipse, alpine..) and after going to the W7, theres no going back. You don't even have to push this sub/amp setup hard to make it sound good, and when you do crank it up, it will play loud and never sound distorted.

Dollar for dollar, you'll get more for your money from the MTX/Memphis combo IMO.

i wouldnt say the 9500 is the best sub,but I had the 12 dual 4ohm,and i ran it off an orion 1200d,i gotta say that thing can get loud, but as far as loud goes, theres so many things that makes a system loud, but i was very happy with the sub,it held up,very well built and could take a beating, only thing i didnt like was the actual weight along with the 2.0 cubic feet box i had it in,it dropped the rear end of my prelude down which didnt really bother me but then i decided to try out a different sub and just stuck with the other one cause i didnt feel like putting the mtx back in cause i didnt want to lift that heavy thing again
