I was wondering how much smaller is the cubby in the years 03-05 comapred to 06-08?

Is the monitor for gps smaller on the newer models?

Can you clarify? What do you mean when you ask “… how much smaller is the cubby in the years 03-05 comapred to 06-08?”

No

That depends upon how much custom fabrication you are willing to do. For example if you are willing to fabricate a completely custom center console piece with a new opening for the upper forward cubby, you could mount a 13” LCD monitor. If you want to keep your existing center console, a 7” LCD monitor is the right size.

Your questions are vague. You will get more help if you describe exactly what you want to do.

A 7” LCD screen will fit into the upper forward cubby of any year Z model. The 2003 Z’s upper/ forward cubby has a pocket that unscrews, so installing the 7” monitor is a simple “drop-in.”

You can fit a 7” monitor into the upper/forward cubby of 2004-present Z’s, but there is some amount of custom fabrication to cut-out the pocket, fit the screen, and provide a supporting bracket/strapping.

Mine didn't come with factory nav but the previous owner installed factory nav and it looks great

Seems like about a thousand times. Truthfully though, probably 50 to 60 times if I count PM's.

There must be a reason this question keeps coming up; I suspect it’s because there’s no “cookbook” answer for anything past the 2003 Z. I suspect mentioning "custom fabrication" results in another battery of questions.

RE> “How nig [big] is the monitor on the factory GPS”
The factory GPS has a 7” LCD screen (and I suppose the actual screen size is something like 6.9”). The screen is RGB (as opposed to NTSC/PAL), and its image is razor-sharp making it equivalent to a CarPC screen. That means it displays text and static graphics as well as your computer screen.

RE> “Also would you rather have a 4.7 screen or 7?”
The 7” screen (opposed to a 4.7” screen) is much easier to read at the viewing distance from the driver’s seat to the upper/forward cubby in the Z. That’s why the stock screen is a 7” LCD. The 7” screen is able to display more information more clearly than a smaller screen.

RE> “does 7 liook [look] too big for our cars?”
The 7” monitor is not too large for our cars. A GPS “knows” when it’s sunset, and some devices (Kenwood OEM Garmin being a good example) invert the image automatically. During nighttime hours, you have a black background with light colored text and graphics to minimize glare for the driver. During daytime hours you have a light colored background with dark text and graphics to make the screen more viewable in sunshine and bright ambient light reflecting off the screen.

Additional info:
  • Nissan’s OEM GPS supplier is Xanavi, a division of Clarion.
  • The stock navigation system (the Xanavi device) is integrated into the stock Nissan’s CES providing seamless voice navigation along with other features.
  • If you have the stock navigation system, and you replace the stock H/U, you lose voice navigation (an maybe some other features). You can maintain the voice navigation using an aftermarket H/U. Search this forum for ways to do this.

That’s it for now.

You need to consider the size of any mounting bracket in your measurements, for example the 5" Nuvi 1490t shown in these photos actually had to have the bracket trimmed of a couple of millimeters of extra plastic. I doubt you're going to fit a anything larger than a 5" without doing some modification of the cubby.

Screen size is important, but not nearly as much as the quality of the device. In my opinion, the Garmins are far superior to the Tom Toms, Magellens, and Nissan OEM. I'd much rather have a 5" Garmin than
