backup camera, new option...
It's a little tricky. You had to pay attention to how the old one came out to know how the new ones goes it. I had to fiddle with it for a few minutes and use a small screwdriver to get the springy end to pop back over the lip of the opening.
Did anyone else have issues trying to plug the light socket into the new housing? Mine doesnt seem to want to fit at all.. the old one just slides into the 4 teeth and turn.. the one that I got from the eBay link doesnt want to be inserted at all, it looks the same size as the OEM housing, but it is not budging at all.
Mine locked in ok when the harness and wire were pointing away from the side with the camera.
On another note, I stopped by the Nissan lot and was looking at some 370's.. Looks like their license plate lights are the same as 350's.. anyone going to try this on a 370?
I've got that second camera I ordered available for sale. A local guy wanted it, but stood me up for a meeting, and I don't mind shipping it to any US PayPal verified address. I'll take $36, which includes USPS Priority Mail, and you'll save the long wait on shipping from China. Shoot me a PM.
After driving around for a while with this new one I'm absolutely in love with it for the simple feature of the guide lines. I can pull up to a parking spot or my own carport and just point the nose of the car away from where I want to go and drop it into reverse then with no problem at all, I can line it up and park it safely.
With my old reverse cam, when trying to park in a strange location, I found myself looking in the side mirrors to judge where I was located relative to the surroundings. The wide field of view and associated distortion of these cameras makes it imperative that some frame of reference is available.
And for only $36 - how can you beat it????

dcains - I was about to say I'd take it, but then I considered the hole I'd have in my license plate from my old cam...lol maybe I will just leave it there unplugged until I can get a new tag at renewal in three months.

Looks like the cam is sold. kevincat is 1st in line, and if that falls through it goes to Panda350z. Don't be afraid to order one from China, though, if you've got some patience.
so gonna purchase this one

but was wondering.. if you put the car in reverse it just automatically turn on the camera and shows on the screen?
or do you have to manually switch it over?

My Kenwood (DNX-7100) switches automatically. There is a wire from the HU that you tap into the power for the camera (reverse light). When you put your car in reverse, the backup lights come up, powering the camera and triggering the HU. IIRC, there is a setting in the HU setup that you have to toggle ON to make this happen.
Does it also have a long purple wire coming out of the harness? That's the one that hooks up to your reverse light to trigger the backup cam switch in the HU.
Look in the A/V Interface Setup of your HU. On mine, the second screen has settings for R-CAM Interruption and R-CAM Mirror. That's where you turn on the automatic switching to the backup camera.

It also reverses the image by default and allows you to not reverse the image also.
There's a RCA connector for video and a power/ground wire. The RCA connector goes to the Video In on the NU. The black ground goes to the body and the red power wire goes to the backup light wire. Also connect the purple wire from the HU to the backup light wire. When the backup lights are on, power is available to the camera so it sends a signal through the RCA connection. The power also lets the HU know that you are in reverse so it switches the video input source to the Camera IN, overriding everything else that the HU might be doing. Once you get out of Reverse, the camera turns off and the HU reverts back to whatever it was doing.
I just finished installing mine and i found that its best to connect the camera to the reverse lights. I had it on ACC at first and it would get really warm fast and the image turned kind of cloudy (condensation?).
So now i have the camera getting power from the reverse lights and the reverse lights also send the +12v to the headunit to activate the reverse signal.
BTW are you guys getting a lot of fuzzyness in the image? i tried the camera on my pc with video in and it was pretty crisp, but on my avic d3 it kind of looks like crap or a channel out of tune. I will see how it looks tomorrow during the day, but there seems to be a lot of static from what i could tell (it actually looks just like the first page pics so i think its normal now, probably poor lighting).
quick note about the install, im using a pioneer avic d3
1. installed it in the right (passenger side) plate light. It looks more oem in that position imo and the image doesnt look too offset. Plate lighting is also a lot more even this way
2. I ran the cables through the rubber gourmet behind the plate, you have to remove your license plate and then you will see it quite clearly. I had to cut a small hole in the rubber gourmet and then I used permatex black rtv gasket maker to cover the junction and seal up the new and old cables so water doesnt enter through that opening.
3. Ran the other cables through the side pillars and roof liner around the driver's side.
4. One more note, the little distance legend is maybe in feet? or inches LOL Mine are blue and i have every number from 1-4.
If anyone has any other issues ill try to help as well. Shipping from China was a crazy wait.
