Default Replace Factory Nav with Double DIN?

Hey guys. New to the forum, and to Z's in general. I've been looking at posts for a couple hours now but can't find the answer.

I've got an 04 touring with Bose and factory navigation, and I'm wanting to replace the whole system with an all in one double din unit.

question is, can I put the new headunit where the factory navigation screen is, and have the current HU spot have some sort of storage option? Anyone have this setup on their car?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Not without rebuilding the entire waterfall center section. It would look hideous in my opinion since that top part of the waterfall is shallow in depth.

Flip it around. Just order the trim with the cubby (no nav).

ah. gotcha. i thought the factory nav would take up roughly the same space as a double din unit.

Yeah, i'll probably go this route. i wanted something higher up though, so i can see at the navi without looking down so far. any suggestions?

since the technology is a few years old, does anyone know if there is an up to date equivalent?

I already tried, the reason the storage/navi and the audio is where they are is because of clearance issues. behind the top cubby the crashbar is in the way. you may get away with a super shallow HU but not gonna happen. I already tried

Most companies have monitors that can connect to their head units. Check out NUKED's recent build in the audio builds subsection.

@Rennen… The upper/forward cubby only holds a thin 7” LCD screen. I agree with your statement that any screen you monitor while driving should be in an optimal position. The DD position in the Z is too low for safe monitoring. The upper/forward cubby is perfect.

Here is my setup…
