Default Help with odd brake squeak...

When I start accelerating from a stop, I can hear the passenger side brake give out a faint audible squeak noise as the rotor spins. After a certain speed, it's hard to hear it with the exhaust rumbling more. From the one side of the rotor I can, the brake pad looks fine, and seems to be wearing down the same as the other rear pad. But perhaps the problem lies with the pad I can't see...

In any case, what can be the cause of this? I also have brake squeal from that same brake, but only at veery slow speeds, and especially when driving in reverse. I believe it's because that brake is missing a shim. But that doesn't explain the noise I hear when the car is rolling.

Help. It's really making me hate driving the car.

Edit: Gah, embarrassing. I typoed and wrote "break" instead of "brake" in the subject.

I already said I KNOW it's missing a shim. And I also said that it doesn't explain the faint squeak when the car is moving and the brakes are NOT applied.

Actually, yes, it could be because of the shim. Mine would squeek when it was missing the shims in the front, brakes not applied. When i got the brake kit, it stopped.

It doesnt make sense to me, either, but it worked.

Cool, thanks. I ordered a new set of pads since they don't sell shims separately. Well, they do sell shims separate, but it costs $50 from Nissan. Might as well just buy a new set of pads for an extra $10.

Thanks again.

If your pads are good, check your rotors. Uneven rotors will also cause this. Actually, they have a higher percentage of why brakes squeal in the first place. The material your brake pads are made out of could also cause squealing no matter if your pads/rotors are good or bad. Just a heads up.

So, it turned out to be a really, really bent tab. Don't know how the hell it got so bent up, but thankfully the brake hardware kit from Nissan comes with shims and tabs. The shims were greased up, installed, the tabs replaced, and half of the squeaking issues disappeared.

I come to realize later on that a large portion of my squeak was from the passenger side front brake, too. So I sprayed down the front caliper with some brake cleaner everywhere...and presto, they're all gone! Car stops as silently as the day I first bought it! Woo! It feels so nice to love your car again. =)
