Jason, I know I posted in here just last week about a rear suspension rattle I had when going over bumps, CRACKS, pot holes, hell anything that isn't a smooth as glass. I know this isn't a thread for this, but you seem to be the only person on this board I trust enough to mess with my suspension. Thus, why I'm here.
I still have that noise even after I tightened my evap canister shielding and I thought the problem was resolved. However, as soon as it got below 95 degrees outside, the noise was back. It's a metallic rattle coming from the rear passenger side. There are actually 2 threads several pages worth of ppl having this exact same rattle.
Here is a list of things I've done to attempt to solve the issue. https://my350z.com/forum/8661385-post115.html

I am a 2007 350z stock suspension w/ 62k miles on odom. My 2006 also did this exact same noise. Apparently those w/ 2003-2005 350z that have a rattle is actually the hatch. This is for sure my suspension. As you'll see why I think that in my link above.

I will pay u for your time. I'll drive to you even though I'm 5 hours away here in Little Rock, AR (I believe you're in Dallas still?)

If you and I can't find the problem I'll just sound dead'n the hatch. If that doesn't solve the issue I'll file for lemon law.
I've been to 2 dealerships 7 times. They can't find the problem.

When summer comes this car makes no noise. (guess due to heat makes items expand) but soon as it gets below 90 out my hatch starts sounding like a zip lock back filled with 1" metal bars clanging amongst eachother over bumps or even cracks in the road.

I can record the sound even from the front seat w/ the radio off currently at night (as it is cooler at night) during the day it's still too hot here in Little Rock to reproduce the problem.
Feel free to PM me so we can work something up. Again, I'll pay ya for your time.

here are the two threads of all of us having this rear suspension rattle (some have just hatch rattle, but most it's the suspension.)

^ okay, let me figure out a time...

For now, remove the metal exhaust heat shield......its above the exhaust......hanging from the hatch floor with three 10mm nuts. studs are permanent.

for reference, you can see it in this pic:

I'll give that a try. Thanks Jason. Also I wrote down some things that others have attempted and never chimed back in the rattle thread. (which makes me think they're method worked)

Jason I removed the heat shield as perscribed by you, Dr. Suspension, and still the noise remains. But it's one less thing I have to worry about when I get aftermarket exhaust.

In any event, since I'd still like to hand the car over to you for your magical cure I figured I'd update you.
Below is a direct copy and paste of one of my posts from the hatch noise thread

FAST FORWARD TO 1:45 MARK AND YOU CAN HEAR THE MAYHEM ESCALATE AS THE CRACKS/BUMPS IN THE ROAD DO.

Here is vid. You may want to just click on the link as the youtube description explains some things. (Yes I know it's sideways-I shot it with my cell phone)

I shot the video today as I was leaving to go to Dallas, TX (5 hours away) so I put my spare tire back in, the tools for spare, & mat for my bags to sit on. I shook stuff around for you guys so you know what they sound like and know for sure that it isn't those items making the rattle noise. Again this noise does NOT take place when the temp is over 95degrees outside. So typically only during the mornings/evenings/winter does this crap happen.

DUB,

I actually saw your vid in that thread over the weekend...went to my car and was looking around...

I think you need to get a stethoscope man... I have one as a mechanic tool and have used stethoscopes to find noised like this.........you may be needing to ride in the back with the hatch open again, etc, but ya...

is it the latch?

I read your description and i think its a blown shock or something loose on it? I think this, because you say that it DOESNT make the noise going up a driveway...thats compression....a shock is rebounding at that piont and not bouncing when hitting bumps down the street...get it?

have you ever replaced the suspension on the car? is the suspension oem shocks and springs??

internally in the shock......put a stetiscope on the rear strut - remove the plastic cover.

put it here where he is drilling....

Drive 10mph down the street with the hatch open and put the stethoscope at the drill point and then put it out on the fender outside the hatch, on the car body as well.

Thanks for the advice!
yeap, it's all OEM w/ 61k miles on em. Never messed w/ the suspension and never replaced one except on my Jeep which was much easier then this car as it isn't an independant suspension.
I'll try that listening trick tonight and report back on what/ where I hear. I'll have to wait till it cools down outside (IE tonight around 11p.m.). Today it's 98 degrees outside currently and thus I have a very quiet suspension.

I heard the noise where the oriental man was drilling.
I took the shock out and shook it and heard nothing. I re-installed. Then pushed several times & with my body jumpin on the back of the z and it didn't make movement like a typical "blown shock" suspension would.

You're gonna laugh. But I got my 6ft 3 *** in the back again but this time as my roommate drove I put my ear on the fender outside, then on the rear strut bar oriental drilling section, then on the floor of the trunk(which was the hardest thing at 6ft 3) and it sounded the loudest at the strut section. Again my entire hatch is stripped during all this.
I have had people PM me saying that they had the same problem I do and their dealership replaced these parts which has cured their problem.

55269-4U00A - Nut
54618-EG01A - Rod Connecting
E6B10-CF40C Absorber Kit
55323 shock mount
55338 shock mounting
56217 bush-rear shock absorb
561113X washer - special
089183081A Nut Flange
55040B Nut
55248N Cover - bound bumper
56218 bush rear shock absorb
55322 bracket assy - shock mounting

Some of these guys had replaced these parts 2 years ago and been through 2 winters and still no rattle.
What would you charge me if I brought these parts to ya? I trust you cause I know you'd torque bolts on where as the dealership will just use a compressor and overtighten which I'm beginning to thing might be the cause of the problem cause removing the rear shock yesterday was a bish! LOL

I have a question about adjusting swaybar endlinks for no preload..

Am I right in thinking you only need to adjust one side on both front and rear to get all four corners preload free?

Exclamation Does anyone see anything wrong with these pictures?

Anyone see 2 springs? True setup ALONG with OEM style?
