Default Third Gear acting funny?!?!?!?

Hopefully someone can offer my some advice...... whenever im shifting hard into third i get a weird chatter , it also seems to be getting more difficult to shift into third at higher RPM's compared to other gears, thinking its maybe a synchro or possibly time for a new clutch, keep in mind its only third though. anyone else experienced this and if so whats going on? THANX
-P.S. - car is a M/T

Is your Z a 03-04 Z? If so you may be experiencing a documented problem. Get the tranny replace under the powertrain warranty of you are still within the warranty.

yes its an '03, im not sure if im under warranty or not i going to check all that out today, car has 20,000 miles on it but its my understanding the warranty was for 3 years/ 30,000, if so i would be out on my 3 years.

If it is a synchro which by now im thinking it is...does anyone know a ballpark estimate on how much labor time is envolved in replacing a synchro??? in regards to a nissan tech, wasnt planning on a DIY job.

I haven't noticed the chatter issue with my 05, however, I have noticed on a few different occasions, when downshifting into third. I get a roar or vibration type of feel from the tranny. I know what the tire roaring is so its definately not that. its a weird roar or maybe groan is a better way to put it. still having a loud bearing noise when in nuetral and the clutch is not engaged as well. i am trying to wait to closer to 60k before i start the real complaining to nissan about it. but any ideas on the 3rd gear downshift groan???

No, you are not out of warranty. 3/30k is for bumper to bumper. If your power windows failed you would be S.O.L. The problem you are having is part of the transmission. That along with the engine is covered under the 5/60k powertrain warranty.

I wouldn't put my guard down just yet. Even though Nissan knows that there's an issue with the early trannys, it'll be like pulling teeth to get them to replace it under warranty. The first thing they will try to claim is abuse on your part ie you've been racing the car. Cars these days are pretty advanced. They will plug your car to their diagnostic machines to pull records of how fast you've been going in which gear and if the limiter was bounced. Good luck.

The only mod on my car is an injen intake, do you think they will have anything to say about that, if so i can throw the stock airbox back on before i take it in.

Nope, just that it was a common problem and they just replace it under warranty instead of fixing it. Hopefully it will be fixed right and not a half A$sed job. They are also fixing a recall on my fuel system lines while they are in there.

Alright so i took my car in today and got a tech to ride with me, confirmed it was probobly a synchro and they would have to replace the tranny, all was good until after they serviced my car and said my tires were pretty bald so that means "someone" has REALLY been abusing the car, then gave me this spill about how powershifting is known to tear up trannys, which i have never done in my life, and proceeded to tell me they probobly wouldnt warranty it...........all because my tires were bald! anyway im gunna go fight it the service manager tommorow.
