It has been well known that Mobil 1 is NO LONGER a 'true' synthetic, but they market it as such.

Someone posted a question directly to Mobil1, and rather than be straight with the answer, they wouldn't comment, saying the 'formula' is secretive. It's not formula we're asking, but simply asking what is it that we're buying.

While Mobil1 is being secretive, Amsoil and Redline, among others, proudly list their basetocks....PAO, and GroupV, the REAL synthetic basestock!!!

I had always used Mobil1 5W-30 on my Z except for one occasion where I used Royal Purple. Before reading this thread I had just purchased more Mobil1 for my next oil change. After reading this thread and verifying the information, I returned my Mobil1 and purchased 6 qts of Castrol 0W-30 which I found at PepBoys for $7.49/Qt. Interestingly, Autozone did NOT carry it at all, they only had 5W-30 and some 10W.

Would it be safe to top off my Mobil1 with the Castrol? My car is not due for a change for a couple thousand more miles and it may be a bit low.

By the way, I was hoping the oil was green but it was the gold. Doesn't smell like gummi bears but it tastes pretty good Goodbye Mobil 1 Hello Castrol

You will have no issues with topping it off with GC. The Gummi Bear green was the old formula and the gold is the newer formula. I have been using this oil since the first oil change and have had an UOA done that is posted in another thread. It's under Engine & Drivetrain - VQ35HR. Under the sticky section.

Prove it. Please.

You might start with something better than posting a screen clip of XOM clearly stating that their M1 oil uses PAO base oils, which you claim is a "REAL" synthetic.

Will (also read on the internets that you need backpressure to make good torque)

Seriously? You mention that you have always used M1 without any issues, but then you read a post on the interwebs that claims M1 is not a "true" synthetic despite what the API says (they regulate what is considered synthetic, btw) and M1's ability to pass a number of high performance manufacturer tests (like Honda's turbo suitability test), and so you go and exchange it for something else only to be worried that you can't mix the two blends? Seriously?

Will (also read on the internets about dynamic compression ratio and how it's important)

Here is a UOA for M1 0-40 that I ran last year. Couple of track days, some trailer towing and some highway. Almost no city driving. M1 doesn't do bad in all VQ's.

There's nothing to prove, use what you like. M1 is a good oil, but I will continue to use an oil brand that clearly states what base stock they use, ie Amsoil or Redline, Motul, rather than a major brand that touts so many things...but what base stocks they use (ahem..Mobil)

Didn't read the whole thread, but has anyone read this:

http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/cms/in...=article&id=83

Basically, thinner synthetic (0-XX) is best according to the author.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but there was discussion earlier in it about the availability of the German Castrol 0-30; I wondered if it was available in Canada and discovered that it is in fact available through Canadian Tire and their Partsource subsidiary, at slightly less than the price for Mobil 1, and exactly the same price that they charge for the Castrol 5-30. FYI.
