Action News: Are Group III basestocks synthetic?

Amatuzio: Yes, they are synthetic. Group III base oils are highly processed oils and were classified as synthetic in 1999. That year, the National Advertising Division (NAD) of the Council of Better Business Bureaus ruled in a complaint by Mobil Oil Corp. against Castrol North America Inc. Castrol claimed its product, Synthec, was a synthetic oil even though it had used Group III base oils since 1997.

Action News: How did that change impact the lubricant industry?

Amatuzio: Initially, the decision by NAD shocked the lubrcant industry. However, many studies show that Synthetic Group III base oils have been completely changed and converted and are significantly different from traditional Group I mineral oils. They have come to be recognized in the industry and by consumers as synthetic.

I think that's how a lot of owners feel. The question is, is M1 still a GroupIV basestock, or are they now a Group III? I'm still not convinced they have changed to a Group III or a G3+, but I think they have changed their formula. It doesn't make sense to me for them to develop a profitable PAO compound and then cut production just to use a modified crude base stock that they haven't put as much into. Developing a G3+ isn't really all that simple. Castrol did it because it was originally cheaper than making a PAO, but since M1 already has the PAO, why develop something else? I think it makes more sense to say they are using less PAO as the base stock and are fortifying it with an AN compound and more viscosity modifiers, or some other similiar measure. Either way it's not the same great M1 it used to be, and when my stock of SL runs out, I'll probably do some searches on VQ engine oil analysis to find a new oil. Makes me wonder if manufacturers that use M1 as factory fill are going to change? Another reason M1 wouldn't want to drop the PAO base stock.

You have a good point Resolute, why go back other than plain greed and a bigger profit margin. Mobil's huge, they probably already had a 3 and 3+ developed, I'm assuming here... thats the problem, know one knows anything!

I guess I feel more comfortable going with Amsoil or Redline, companies that disclose there basestock in print. $6 bucks (Mobil) vs $7.15 (Amsoil)... Thats too small of a difference, I like knowing I'm better protected with (POA).

I've been using Mobil 1 5w-30 supersyn since the car had 7,500 miles and I have no oil consumption whatsoever in between my oil changes every 5k. With that said I am switching to Amsoil next oil change. GC is a good oil but too thick for my tastes. I am getting Amsoil ATM 10w-30 which ironically is a little bit thinner than Mobil 1 5w-30. I may switch to Amsoil ASL 5w-30 or TSO 0w-30 after that depending on how I like the ATM 10w-30.

Like mentioned in this thread, GC is very thick, almost a 40 weight oil. The 0w part is only when the oil is cold, on cold starts. At normal temp, it is basically a 40 weight oil.

Are you sure that it is the GC 0W-30? I ask because I went to an Autozone yesterday and they had a 0W-30 Syntec, but it did not look like the one pictured on this board.

It looks like the GC is dissapearing. Castrol USA is now making 0W-30, so it seems that there is no reason to import the GC anymore. More and more people are reporting it to be replaced on the shelves with the regular GroupIII Syntec, or just removed all together. Hopefully you can find some where you live.

M1's not cheap, nor is the GC. Or Amsoil, or any of the other G4 oils posted in this thread. I know Motul sponsors Nismo racing and is the "cool" oil to use, but there have been several UOA to show that Esther base stocks aren't the best for a daily driver. If we all drove race cars that had the engine rebuilt every season, then by all means. There is a reason that no OEM uses or recommends a G5 oil, even in the most exotic of cars. Hell, why stop at Motul- just start using Silkolene in your ride. It's an esther base stock, Group V oil just like Motul and used by most F1 teams in their engines, and is expensive as hell. Why be cheap, right? Never mind that they at least post on the bottle "race use only."

I use M1 and im glad i seen this thread...would you also recommend not using the mobil 1 oil filter. if not what recommendation for oil filter..also how easy is it to obtain some Amsoil, or royal purple...i haven't seen them in a regular auto store. thanks

For Royal Purple go to their website and you should be able to find a local retailer. I know that some NAPA and O'Rilley stores sell it.
