Damn, the GC is disappearing? Just when I'd decided to switch to it... I bought 5 qts a few weeks ago for my next change; maybe I need to go back and clean off the shelves if they have any left...

I went and check out the Amsoil website, there are so many types and choices of synthetic oil. Which one is the right for our Z's? Please advise!!!

I think Mobil 1 and Castrol syntec are the best. Because BP Amoco makes Castrol and Exxon makes Mobil 1. The 2 largest oil companies in the nation.

This is the Group IV oil that is often talked about in this thread.

You can get a better price from this guy.

I've been dealing with him for about 3 years and he's been on Maxima.org site for several years with flawless customer service.

i want to switch to amsoil but do you think that 0w30 might be too thin for a twin turbo car?

After I started to track my car, I began looking into information about the best oil to use. During my research I found several examples of M1 showing high lead content (bearing wear) in used oil analysis on Vq35 engines.

I know M1 is considered to be the best oil, but it never was a good oil for the Vq35 engine. Another reason to not use M1 would be that it is no longer a true synthetic. Several months ago they changed their formula.

Mobile1 is no longer a true synthetic

Mobil sued Castrol for calling their oil a full synthetic. Which according to Mobil it wasnt a full synthetic like M1 since its not made from a Group IV base stock.

They lost the case, so they decided to start using the cheaper base stock just like Castrol, pennzoil etc. Why make a real synthetic that costs you more money to make then the competition who is charging the same price for their fake synthetic?

German Castrol Syntec 0w-30, Amsoil, redline are some of the few remaining TRUE synthetics( Group IV). The other Castrol syntecs, penzzoil platinum and now Mobile 1 are not TRUE synthetics. They are hydrolocked Group III oils.

Here is an example of how even yellow bottled Pennzoil Dino outperformed M1 in our engine.

M1 used to be a great oil, now its an overpriced fake synthetic. My current fill is German Castrol Syntec 0w-30 (auto-zone only). Unlike the other castrol syntecs it is a true Group IV oil, here is an oil analysis on a G35 coupe. As you can see this oil shows very little wear after 7500 miles.

I am skeptical that the lead and iron numbers you have highlighted prove anything. What about the readings for Moly, Silicon, calcium, phosphorous and zinc, which are all higher with penziol? Also, how do you reconcile the difference in mileage between the Mobil and Penziol tests? How hard were these cars driven and in what conditions? The only way you can draw conclusons from such tests is to have two identical vehicles driven in similar conditions in similar driving styles. Otherwise the data is not comparable and any conclusions are suspect.

There are many studies out there that demonstrate that, except for extremene cold conditions, the type of oil is not the major factor in engine wear. Rather, it is the frequency of oil and filter change that is the significant factor in engine life.

hey guys 3 of us here just changed our diffs/and engine oil using amsoil. ts0 0w-30 for engine, all i can say is wow i def can tell a difference, runs alot smoother. i initially had mobil 1, then swapped to royal purple which i couldnt stand as it seemed to burn off quick and get dirty quickly. we will see how it does as i know one of use is sending it to blackstone when the time comes.

Other threads seem to differ, as they ARE saying that M1 is now a Group III blend, no longer Group IV.

Yes, but group 3 oils are still considered synthetic, but not as good as group iv based synthetics. Most of the other synthetics on the market are group 3, castrol, penzoil etc.

My point is I always use BP or Exxon gas and its great. So are the oils. GM quality is not good from my experience.

I am currently using valvoline and I am happy. Seems like the engine works better then on castrol.

That test is like 10 yrs old. Mobil 1 hasn't made those bottles for years.
