Default Extreme Sensitive 'Slip'

So I have a 2004 350z enthusiast.

My slip light comes on at some odd times. 99% of the time its fine. Ok some specific corners, sometimes, the slip light comes on. The only thing is, it seems like it shouldn't be coming on when it does. As in, I drove a 97m3 for quite some time, it had traction control as well, and it didn't seem to come on as often as it does on my 350z, even though it really doesn't come on all that often in the first place.

So my question stands, have you guys noticed the traction control is more sensitive on a 350z than other cars? Or does it just seem that way to me?

How many miles on your Z? Does you car have the VLSD? What are the conditions of your tires?

The important question is "what size are your tires?" as non-standard stagger is the cause of 99% of VDC/TCS problems.

...And what condition are the tires in? also, what's the tire pressure?

Do you see a trend here? We need a lot more info in order to do an internet diagnosis.

Tires are in very good shape, probably 90% tread left, and pressure is fine.

It has 15,000 miles or so on it.

I will have to go outside and look at the wheels, but they are aftermarket 17inch, GHT or something like that - on the car when I bought it. I thought the wheel size may be a problem, however wouldn't the slip light come on more often than just a couple of places if the wheel size was wrong?

I will look at my car as soon as I can and post the tire/wheel size.

Ok, here we go.

Rears: 275x50x17

Fronts: 225x40x17

Something about those numbers just don't seem right to me, I'm used to staggered rims ... I don't know.

Jebus! Your car must have like a 70's muscle car rake to it. Stock tire sizes are 225/50/17 front 235/50/17 rear so those tires you have on effectively drop the front 45mm and increase the rear 40mm over stock diameters. That's almost a 3.5" difference!

Ordinarily the concern is when the rear is smaller than the front, since the computer senses slip via the wheel speed sensor. In your case I'd say you probably just have a wicked case of understeer and that huge sidewall in the rear probably gets pretty bouncy and therefore would let go abruptly.

All internet theory, but regardless I'm sure you would experience a world of difference with a nice 18-19" lightweight wheel combo and some summer tires. If cash is tight at least pick up a set of factory wheels and tires in the marketplace section. Good luck.

Oh yeah, if you have pics please post them...

Damn! no wonder you're having problems. The standard stagger is about 3/4", the acceptable range is supposed to be about 1/4 to 3/4". Your is over 3-3/4"

You need about a 275/35/17" for the rear to have a reasonable stagger. As you widen the rear tire, you must shorten the profile to help maintain a proper tire OD.

I will post pics tommorow - thanks for the info, any other people chiming in would be great. Like I said, I got the car like this ... so yea

Honestly though, it seems to drive fine 99% of the time. And the more I think about it, the times it has come on has been on an angled corner, and there's a good chance that the rear tires did start to let loose a little ...

On a 17" rim, he'll need more a 45 or 50 profile. A 35 profile will be a lot smaller diameter than stock even with a 275 width.

"chime"
I can vouch for tire sizes causing SLIPpage.

Thanks. Can anyone suggest tire sizes that would work with these rims? I was thinking about getting new ones, but these are kind of growing on me.

depends on wheek dimensions, but you might want to go back to OEM 17 inch sizes
