Default Auto trans swap to 6 speed manual question

Yes…I searched, I’m not that much of a noob…

To make a long story short, I recently became the new to me owner of a 2003 Touring with ever bell and whistle I’d been looking for except one – 6 speed manual transmission. I purchased the car at a very affordable price point through a credit union repo auction, otherwise I would have been searching for a manual 350z from the beginning.

So, what kind of hurdles might I be looking at if I were to swap the transmission to manual? How does this effect performance and the other OEM functionalities of the car (gauge gear indicator, TCS, etc…) If it’s simply not worth it, I’ll get over it, but this would be my #1 mod and would justify spending more money on the car down the road on upgrades.

I’m looking for OEM performance, where a second owner couldn’t tell this car started off as an automatic. This question stemmed from a recent 6spd transmission for sale post on craigslist in my local area. $700 OBO and I’ve got a GREAT affordable mechanic.

I think you would be better off trading your car for a manual transmission car. Switching the auto to a manual would involve changing a lot of parts. You would need the transmission, clutch, flywheel, pedal assembly, electronic control module and probably several things I have forgotten. It would be a challenge.

It's not that difficult. It's a very common mod in the Maxima community, let's say. It became so common it wasn't even expensive to perform anymore ($1000 with parts and labor).

I’m just scratching the surface right now and wondering what the cost and challenge would be. I know it won’t be easy and if for any chance the car performs worse than OEM…I’d be pretty upset.

I just can’t drum up enough passion to mod an auto – even wheels.

It's been done before. GTM offers a package for around $10k and you can pick high performance parts... Give Sam a call.

That said, you'd just be paying to make it slower!

not worth it. you can try to sell the auto since you got it at repo auction for I hope a lot lower than the value of the car, and get a 6mt Z.
