For the JGTC questions:
the GT300 cars do use the VQ35. The GT500 cars use the VQ30. This has NOTHING to do with which block is better. NISMO used the displacement that made sense for each class. Since the GT500 cars are limited to around 500hp, they had to use the VQ30, because in GT500, turbo engines with more than 3.0 Liters of displacement must carry a higher minimum weight and use smaller restrictors. They can easily make 500hp and even more torque with the VQ35, but why bother with the extra penalties if they could do the same with the VQ30? It only makes sense.
the GT300 use the VQ35 for the same reasons. The cars are limited to 300hp, well crap, that's essentially stock for a VQ35, with more torque than the VQ30. Why not boost the VQ30 and make more torque? Again, the restrictor size and weight penalty wouldn't be worth it, so a torquey 3.5L V6 made more sense, as well as help brand image to boot.
As far as vibration goes, the VQ35 is won't be as smooth because..... wait for it..... it's a bigger engine. Seems obvious, but the longer stroke, larger pistons, and increased mass that goes along with it increases the amount of torsional vibration induced on the crankshaft. Fact of life. Nissan did a pretty good job of it though with a lot of micropolishing, etc. For a big V6, it really is pretty smooth. I think of installing 100mm sleeves for a 3.8L block, but shudder at the vibrations it would produce at high revs above 7200rpm. The upcoming 3.8 flat 6 in the next 911GT3 will make me cry with envy, but a horizontally opposed engine is much smoother for 3rd order harmonics, and a V6 isn't. Another Fact of Life.
Finally, I think for a high revving N/A VQ, this is a pretty sweet idea, but I wonder about the heads. The Z has much better breathing than the VQ30 heads, but I wonder about fitment, especially without the CVTCC system installed. Tilley's99, how did that go for you, any special gaskets required or custom block off plates? FWIW, the GT300 Z doesn't use the CVTCC system, again for penalty reasons, and the front cover of a VQ30 I guess fits just fine, but I haven't taken either apart to look and am curious.
Thanks for your info,
Will

Just wanted to give a shout out to all the .orgy boys! I miss you guys!
As for the Z owners on here hating...STFU...nobody wants to hear your pissing and moaning. Most of you guys made a mockery of this thread that should have been technically informative.
The VQ is a great platform for performance...in both 3.0L and 3.5L form.
Tilly...what do you think the rev capabilities of your 3.2L motor are?
oh..and if one more person called the higher rev limiter VQ35 the "rev-up motor"...I think I'm going to scream.

My best guess would be a reliable 500whp but still having the cooling issues of the VQ35 block(if their are any?).

Maybe you'd get a slightly warmer reception over here if you didn't have "in front of a 350Z" in your Location.
When no maxima has ever seen 10s...and we have a 10 second 350Z on here with a stock motor..and an 8 second street legal 350Z..you can hardly talk any crap. I'm not bagging on the max...I used to own one, and I respect every innovative thing you guys are doing with them.

Im sure thats far from the reason most of these guys are talkin ****. I have yet too see a z at the track that was even faster then my all motor low 13 sec maxima (except for trailer queens). Hell at MIR i beat one by 2 seconds and the guy looked at me like it was a joke till he got smoked.

You have to be kidding me. We get pissy because of self inflated people like you, who think that your car is the ****. Given you have a nice 350, i looked at it, I'm not gonna even try to diss you, but the fact that a well driven maxima on many occasions has beaten a well, or poorly for that matter, driven 350 doesnt lend any backing to your argument that the 350 is a better car. When you race a Mustang GT and beat it, they say ok fair enough, that was an even match. Until you see the utterly stupefied look on a GT owners face when he is beaten by an externally stock 4th generation maxima, I don't expect you to understand why we do it.
Edit: Oh by the way, I DO drive a grocery getter! The fact that I can pack my car with FOOD and still outperform 80% of the cars on the road just proves even more that my car is t3h r0xx0r. Have fun with your 2 golfbags.

It would be funny to see the look on your face after getting your dick knocked off by a "grocery getter". Respect other people's cars and maybe they'll give you respect in return.

and by the same token... I love the look on Z06, Viper and 911 Turbo owner's faces after all they see is my taillights.

What's funny is there are F-body guys out there laughing at us with our Z's when we spend a lot more money than they do to make our cars fast. To them what we do is a waste of money.
The fact is...everyone is different and everyone enjoys different things. Give respect and you shall receive the same in return.

This post was made by dynamic6er like 20 mintues ago and then taken down quickly...not quite sure why, but since it was up...it's some good public information..so I thought I'd bring it back from the dead.
I'll throw my .02 into this thread. The VQ35 piston speeds are well within reason for 9000rpm. Actually in terms of ft/sec they operate slower then many Honda motors. The valve train is actually one of the better styles out there for high RPM use because it uses the cam on bucket(ie-Supra 2JZ-GTE) instead of a lifter and rocker assembly. So with the right porting, cams, valves, and springs the VQ35 is more then appropriate for high RPM use. Once you are at 5000 to 5500 ft/sec that is when things get to be to much. That would be considered F1 speeds. But even then some crazy Honda motors do this pretty consistantly. I would agree that the bearing size may become an issue on the VQ35. A VQ40 does upgrade you to 70mm mains as opposed to the 50mm on the 35. Below is a table of calculate picston speed at "X" rpm for the stock stroke on the VQ35.
