Default Powerlab Dumptube Weld Crack

Hey All,

It's been 10 months since my car was dyno'd and tuned but managed to catch the uprev Dyno event this past weekend. The techs did a pre-dyno checkup and found that I had a crack pre-wastegate. We did the dyno and the loss was obvious as I had dropped from 6.5lbs of boost to around 4.

Original Dyno (mustang):

Recent Dyno (dynojet):

Based on the recent dyno I'm running extremely lean under boost which I contribute to the crack. I'm hooking up with Jtran to fix the weld crack and will put the car back on the dyno to resolve the tune issues. Johnny mentioned that the dumptube welds cracked on his customers car also so beware.

Unfortunately, I think this happened to two other people as well. The last time I heard of this happening was well over a year ago, and I thought Powerlab has since reinforced that particular weld (Assuming it's the same weld that I am thinking of). Those that had a crack, I think had their local shops re-weld and reinforce it a little. I don't think I have ever heard of those people having it "re-break".

Sorry OP, hopefully you get it fixed quickly and are back up and running at full power!

Yup, it's the same spot as the other two guys. I think it's the weight of the WG right on that weld. Have them grind it, and re-weld it stronger, and you should be good to go!!

Just reweld it, the metal around the weld is weak, that's all. I had Meineke do it, no problems since

You found a Meineke that can weld stainless? Did they TIG weld it? Did they purge the back side of the weld with Argon to prevent contamination ("sugaring")?

Meineke.....where skilled Tig Welders work. I have yet to see a "muffler shop" with a tig welder. Even when they weld stainless, they are Mig welding it with regular Er70S-6 wire and 75/25 gas. It'll work, but it's not right. You can MIG weld stainless, but you should use stainless wire (for the correct alloy) and a "tri-mix" gas that is specific to stainless steel welding.

If you are re-welding a weld that cracked, why would you do so with methods that are inferior to the original weld which wasn't sufficient to begin with? Isn't that just asking for it to fail again?

the original weld broke in under 2,000 miles, the reweld has lasted 8...which was the inferior weld again?

the cause of the cracking is the stress on that particular portion of pipe. I think the amount of welding is insufficient no matter the material. Hence the reinforcing of the pipe. Ive had the reinforced pipe for 8k miles and no problems since installing it.
