Default Anyone tried cut-outs?

Sorry if this has been posted before, I did a search and didn't see anything.

So I was thinking about cut-outs (basiclly a small Y pipe that can be opened and closed from a switch. When it's open, you pretty much just have open headers.) instead of an exhaust system.

The more I think about it the more appealing it is. I can simply open it up when I go to the track, and just have my stock exhaust the rest of the time. Also, I would save some money by not having to buy a $$ cat-back system.

Has anyone done this? Or any other thoughts on this setup?

It sounds like a cool idea, but you’ll have to do it yourself. I doubt if a reputable shop will install cut-outs. The only disadvantage that I can see is tuning: is the Z tuned to run with the cut-outs open or closed? If you have an ECU that has not be flashed, the Z may perform worse with open exhaust.

How would you save money when the work will probably cost more? That is definately custom work.

Also, wouldn't you be banned from the track (if you are talking about track track and not drage strip) because your car would be making the most awful load noise with an open pipe before the cats?

It's custom work, but only around $300-400. And by track I mean 1/4 track.

Thanks for the info alang.

PM socalted he has them on his G35 sedan. If you go to G35 driver and search electonic exhaust cutouts you will find the thread in between pgs 4-7 I can't remember exactly which one. The thread has sound clips closed and open with pics along with prices and contact info. I'm thinking of doing the same thing when I go turbo in a few months. I think it sounds mean especially for a G35 sedan. Here are some of the pics from the thread.

its definitely good for forced induction vehicles.....by all means, get a pair of QTEC electric cutouts. Ran one on my b15 turbo, it was great.

However......I don't see any gains at all for n/a. Hell, you'd probably lose power because the velocity of the exhaust would be all screwed up.

My friend has this on an STi. He claims it runs harder with the cutout open. But then, he isn't NA, he's running 21psi. It sounds like the meanest rally racer you've ever dreamed of, only louder. It was intense from in the car, windows up..
