im not quite sure on this either. I think it may have something to do with less restriction.. and possibly.. back pressure?

you know its funny, last time i checked thats called an afterfire, and a backfire was literally a backfire of pressure through the intake system.

Not having cats allows unburned fuel/air to accumulate in the exhaust system. The unburned mix can occasionally ignite causing the backfires.

Cats, by their function, reduce or avoid this condition.

^^ oh i see thanks

i dont think fire would literally come out but you get what i am saying

i guess that nice sound will go away when i put cats back on

why do exotic cars have that as well though, i dont think they remove their cats. is it jsut casue of their expensive exhaust

Exotic cars don't really meet the smog or CAFE standards the same way a large scale production car does.

Taxes are applied to cars that do not meet the CAFE standard.
For Ferrari or Porsche they don't mind the extra taxes. The volume is low and their customers will pay anyways. Exotic cars are also allowed to cheat a little more when it comes to smog.

For Toyota and Nissan it makes a big difference. Their production volumes are vastly higher so the taxes add up to huge $$$. Nissan and Toyota production vehicles aren't given any slack when it comes to emissions testing.

And their customers don't have the same money to throw around for taxes. And most Nissan and Toyota customers don't want the backfire sound either.
