Part 6 - US passenger side only !! Driver side is still same part number as 2003/2004.

Part 12 - 2005 a new part number driver/passenger - different from 2003/2004

Strut and Shock part numbers changed in 2004.5

What percentage of tread was left on the tires when you bought the car? Mine has gotten progressively louder ,but some of that is due to road surface conditions. Ive noticed it getting louder as i come to a stop from about 30 or 40 mph.

OK, I have an appt. next week to get my feathering issue checked out. I was lead to belive that once the toe-in issue is fixed feathering would no longer be a problem. Is this not the case?

I have had my '03 aligned by Nissan 3 times to thier specs and my car still feathers a set of front tires in about 5k miles. I then rotate the tires get another 5k before having to get a new set.

I personally will NEVER purchase another Nissan vehicle again and I tell everyone I can about this incident. My family ( parent, brothers, sisters, etc ) have been Nissan ( Datsun ) vehicle owners for 30+ years but never again.

Nissan: screw me once shame on you, screw me twice shame on me...

Thank you Amy. For some reason I never got the email notification of your reply.

If I were to start having problems, this is the type of factual information I would provide my attorney. If Nissan engineers are revising parts of the front suspension, there has got to be a good reason why or the bean counters wouldn't allow it....anyone care to take a guess?

Would you mind posting/pm'ing the page(s)?

I don't think this has been posted so here's a pic of the "NEW" RE040 tread pattern. It looks so different from the "original" RE040 (pic attached for comparison, rears tho). I wonder how these tires can both be called RE040.

The only change that was made was to the outside treadblocks, which are now connected instead of having the sipes running all the way through. Otherwise the interior pattern, construction and materials are all the same from what I recall.

Anyways, thanks for posting these photos...someone did post these awhile ago and I could not find them for the life of me!

Is your car within the Nissan specified warranty extension time period to get this problem resolved according to the letter Nissan sent out 2 or 3 months ago? If it is then show them the letter and tell them to get bent on the $540.00.

On a side note i threw my letter away in disgust as my dealer service dept has been totally useless in warranty issues. If your fortunate to have a 2nd dealership in reasonable driving distance you might want to try them instead.

daytona, I can relate! When it comes to warranty issues, the dealerships are very difficult to deal with. I don't understand why though, if they are being paid directly by nissan. I hate going there for any problem.

They're excuse is they have to justify each warranty claim to Nissan. Well tough sh*t, its part of their job. They need to quit bi*ching and work with the customer not against them. Ill wind up taking my Z to a local tire shop for new tires and alignment to avoid the dealership service dept doing that work.

Is it just me or does anyone else think the new RE040 tread (anti-feathering) design looks unsafe for wet weather. They don't look like they would channel the water effectively, resulting in possible hydroplaning especially when cornering. Are there any tire experts here that can comment?

I believe now more than ever, like everyone else here, that this tread re-design was done for one purpose........ to delay the re-occurance of feathering/tire growl until we are all out of the waranty period, then we are all S.O.L. Those outer treads are now one continuous solid piece with sipes stopping half way across; therefore, less flexing will occur between adjacent sections; hence, delaying the onset of feathering. Just my opinion. Again, maybe a tire expert can comment.

BTW, I have Nissan Canada service dept. printouts of the part changes for '05. Now I need to find a good lawyer in Canada. If anyone is interested, I'll post scans of the printouts.

I think this can be analyzed to death with no real answers. Has anyone besides me had a partcular vehicle that wore one manufacturers' tire more than another? I have had a previous Z with BF Goodrichs. When they wore out I replaced with a Pirrelli. They wore on the inside shoulder which some might say was an alignment problem. I seriously believe that some tires wear differently on different cars.

I had the TSB done on my car and replaced tires with new RE040's, problem fixed... no changes in handling, wet weather traction, or noise

DavZ...Nissan had also changed the suspension for the 06 model. Although I haven't found out just what yet. Jason at Performance Nissan I think was looking into this. I would like to see your list...I know about the spindle, shocks, upper and lower arms for the 05 model. The part change date is 8/04.

The real issue is that Nissan will claim that the part changes is a routine parts improvement or change and not a direct cause an effect of the feathering issue. I'm sure they will claim that the surrent TSBs address the issue. With the Z sales still doing great they have little incentive here. It will take a strong class action suit to win this and make them retro fit the 03 and 04 suspension. Just my opinion.

My 03 went through two sets in 12K miles. My third set I got from Nissan but swapped them out for Goodyear F1 GSD3s. I only have 1600 on the new tire so I don't know. I also did a mechanical alignment using Bear equipment on all four instead of a computerized alignment. The mechanic was at least 80 but he had been doing alignment for at least 40 years. He was also recommended by our local speed shop.

I'm sure the laws in Canada are different but I am sure there are some sharp class action guys in the states looking to make some bucks too!
