Tire FEATHERING: FYI
Hey james,
When I had my feathered tires replaced over two years ago, the also damaged both of my rims with there tire machine. Yeah I FINALLY got two new rims, but now I have to take my car to an outside company that does tire work. The nissan dealer here will not do tire work for me anymore.

When you get your tire work done, make sure they DONT use an impact wrench to take them on and off. That will mess up the wheels on the inside of the lug holes. The nissan dealer i have is going to do it since they were the ones that damamged them. But before i leave there service dept. im going to inspect them before i leave.
Yes , the lug holes get damaged. I can't see them ever taking that much care to not scratch the holes. Mine were cut along the outer edge of the rim around the tire lip area. (DOWN TO THE ALUM)
Does anybady know if the tire feathering problem still exist on the 05 tourings. I just bought one and wanted to know if there is anyway i could check that my tires rubbing away quicker than they should??
i took my car in for a the rear wheel bearing tsb...and they replaced my front tires and did an alignment. they indicated that the tires were a recall...but i really never noticed any feathering. i hope they didn't screw up my car...i have about 10k. i will have to keep an eye on it now to see what happens. this is the longest thread in history btw

What can I do if I purchased a set of 350Z track wheels and put them on my 03 G35 Sedan? I think that the alignment is off on my sedan as well and the tires have feathering for sure. Can I bring my car to a Nissan dealer and have this fix with no cost to me or even a Infinti dealer?
I took my car in yesterday just to check things over and look at the tire roar. Dealership suggest i rotate tires from front to back and from back to front. Hmmm you cant do that. I tried to tell them the tire sizes where different and it can not be done. They did not understand on the phone so i will have to show them in person. Just shows that some of there mechanices have no clue what they are doing. I told them not to touch the rims or tires till i got there cause i dont want my rims all scratched.

this thread is unbelievable...has anyone really read through each page....can someone condense this thing....wow
OK, it's been too quiet. Who has the most mileage so far on their new RE040's (new tread design) with the latest tsb#2 alignment specs? I have about 1,000 kms so far, but that's way too early for signs of feathering or tire roar.
Anyone have closer to 10,000 kms or more yet? Any signs of the dreaded feathering or tire roar?
It would also be cool if someone could post a comparison of the original '03 factory alignment specs vs. these latest specs? And while we're at it, how about including the tsb#1 alignment specs just for $hit$ and giggles. I wonder how different they are from each other. Could it be they just reverted back to the original specs?

Because of feathering my front tires were replaced. Ten thousand miles later I was told by the dealer that My Z is out of alignment and needs two more new tires but that my warranty expired 2 wks ago.So we will see if they do anything.I have a file number through Nissan consumer affairs going on this car. I have repeatly ask what they are going to do as a permanent fix for this problem since it is a design and manafactering flaw.Of course I am being ignored on that. Does anyone know about a possible class action suit on this problem?
The best I have heard of and experienced is using an attorney to aproach NNA once you have tried to resolve this issue with no positeve results (ie, the issue still exists after the 'fix').
Nordy 1 what year is your Z?
Mine was a 2003 Enthusiast, NNA attempted 4 times to 'fix' the feathering issue. After the 4th I was told that was it, it was my problem.
I contacted a lemon law attorney and without going to court I was given a setelment I considered acceptable.
I then bought a 2005 Z Enthusiast.
If you can document your process this should work for you also.

i have an 04 enthusiast....i am wondering if this problem is more prevelant with the 03's or does the problem exist with the newer models too?
as i mentioned earlier, i had my tires replaced about a month ago without even requesting the dealer to replace them. i was scheduled for the rear bearing problem and that appears to be fixed now. i never noticed a feathering problem before so it still baffles me why they would replace my tires anyways....treating it as a recall more or less.

from Nissan.
I thought I read somewhere that the '06 model Z's have a different caster setting than earlier models. Waaaaay back when this problem first arose, didn't some smart tire guy say that only caster could cause such a wear pattern (which most erroneously refer to as feathering but is actually cupping?). Why do Z owners put faith in camber and toe settings if caster is the problem and is not adjustable on the Z? I don't believe any tires or one million alignments will solve this problem on pre-06. I'm predicting that we won't see the problem on '06 models though.
I won my lemon law case almost a year ago, got an s2000 and it hasn't seen the shop once except to have fluids changed. There's not a thing wrong with it. By this time, my Z was in the shop 14 times. To be fair though, the S had issues when it first came out as well, and I had an early run '03 Enthu. So, I'm sure Nissan will get the issue worked out and that change for '06 might just be it. Just don't expect Nissan to offer any true fixes for the early models...they'll just pacify people with their "let's look like we actually care and can fix the car" tactics. But really, they are just waiting us all out until the problem just goes away.
Sorry to be such a pessimist but that's why I got rid of my Z. Too bad, there were lots of things I liked abou it but too many negs. I can't say I miss it though!

Feel the same here about nissan's approach to this problem. I believe what your said sums it up.

Has any one filed anything with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration: www.nhtsa.dot.gov I feel this is a safety issue. Or writen to CNN for a good story
Isnt there any aftermarket fixes out there, that one can do to fix it if they like there z? If not sounds like maybe someone should, there would be lot of money in it
id think

id thinkI thought about bringing up the whole seat clicking/shifting thing ,again, as a safety issue the next time i am at the stealership service dept, (yeah right), just to see what kind of reaction i would get.
Im sure that after some bloated federal gov. agency got around to doing somthing about nissan's suspension issues all of us will have moved on to some other form of transportation or our retirement plans. As for a front suspension fix id say an aftermarket suspension setup might be the only thing at this point. Possibly if nissan redesigned the suspension in the 2006's then there maybe a possibility of a retro fit of parts to the 03-05 models. Other than that we're screwed.
