Tire FEATHERING: FYI
Wrong. The f*k'd up tread when severely worn messes with your braking and handling.
Just before mine we "swapped" I tried a quick stops and the ABS went nuts with the tires up front chattering under hard braking.
Not everyday you do panic stops, but when you do, it's usually for a damn good reason - avoiding injury to you, someone else,...my tires were just about as bad as the photo at the beginning of this entire thread and braking really suffered.
I originally went in to the dealer because I thought something was wrong with my brakes, or the ABS.
It was neither brakes or the ABS- TIRES. SUSPENSION. DESIGN. Take your pick.

Yes this is a real shame. My car has been to the dealer 6 times in the last month. I am basically trying to get it in there as often as possible to pursue the lemon law. I have had just about every possible thing go wrong on my car. As soon as a TSB is released I take it in like "remember when I told you this was an issue". I did a pre order on my car so it was one of the first Z'm made, but my combo of problems pretty much assures me that I did in fact get a lemon. It's too bad that Nissan's flagship car is having so many problems. In my case anyway.
Either way - the front tires would not have matched the rear in terms of 50 series vs. 45. That's what killed me. If they were to replace all 4 then it wouldn't be a problem. Now, since they screwed up - they offered to replace all 4 now. So atleast they added 2 more tires to the order for their F-up. Now, let's see what they send. It's been a week now and no word as of yet - mainly due to the RE04's being back ordered everywhere.....
Wonder why there is a run on the tires?!?!?!
Your 1st two guesses don't count.....

We can also alert the press to our organized effort for Nissan to address our issue.
I believe we can be heard if we organize our efforts! If your Name and VIN# is not on the letter already, just add it to the list before you fax it over to Nissan.
I will start faxing on Friday, 11/14/03 at 9am (Pacific Time)
Who is with me?

Dear Nissan Motor Co.,
We implore the leaders of Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. to stand behind and deliver on Carlos Ghosn’s promise, "The New Z will deliver the performance and high design qualities of today's cutting-edge sports cars at a truly attainable price. Our goal is to build a memorable, no-compromise sports car..." by fixing the tire feathering/cupping issue on the 2003 350Z. (TSB Ref: NTB03006)
We demand that the Nissan Motor Co. make a commitment to quality and ensure the “Z” heritage not be diminished by allowing a sub-standard product to be on the market.
All of us have put our faith in the Nissan Brand by purchasing our 350Z sight-unseen. Many of us pre-ordered and put deposits down for our cars, 8 to 12 months, in advance because we believed in the words of Shiro Nakamura, Senior VP Design NML, “First, the design offers strong visual and driving appeal, but the Z can also be appreciated for the more practical side that comes with everyday ownership – durability, utility, comfort, reliability and low maintenance.”
We plead for a timely and thorough investigation of this issue. Please do NOT allow shame to be shed on
Kazutoshi Mizuno, 350Z Chief Vehicle Engineer, by turning a deaf ear on a serious problem with the 350Z.
We call for a complete and permanent solution and most of all, justice. Please do not let us down. We believe
as Carlos Ghosn does, "that the Z is the heart & soul of Nissan". We would hate to find out that the "350Z DNA" is made up of inferior genes.
In Solidarity,
The Undersigned

WOW! If I would have known that I would get such a great effort on everyone part to do the faxing I would have started this a long time ago.
Thank you to all that have written me with your support. I appreciate all the encouragement!
Please only fax each number once. I would like to have as many different people as possible get this letter into Nissan. The more people that fax this letter in, the more creditablility our efforts will have.
Ian

Looks like when ever I have any tire work done on my car I will have the service writer note on the work order that the wheels came in perfect and then I will have to check them when they are done. Thanks for the heads up.
i took my car in to get the TSB done on the feathering issue, and this is what i got from my service dealer:
(i dropped my car off at 9:30AM, and this conversation happened over the phone at 3PM)
him: "let's wait till next time you come in to get this fixed"
me: "why"
him: "this is a one-time fix, and nissan is working on a permanent fix right now, so let's wait till then"
me: "i'd like to get it fixed right away"
him: "but like i said, this is a one-time repair"
me: "we'll fix it now, and we'll fix it again later"
him: "...ok but the tire shop won't be able to do it today. you'll have to leave the car here overnight."
me: "i'll come in again tomorrow morning"
the retard...he should've called me earlier today telling me that he wanted to get it fixed later.
what kind of ******** is "one-time" repair? it's a warranty service, so they fix it now, they fix it later, then they fix it again and again until they fix it right. then if they can't fix it, nissan buys it back.
and nissan is working on a permanent fix? somehow i don't believe his words...

I got off the phone with the kind folks at Nissan just a few minutes ago...
I called them yesterday about the feathering issue and what nissan is doing to fix the problem as well as finding out for sure if the 04 has the new 'euro' suspension.
Ok, ALL 2004 Z's have this new suspension. All of them. There are NO 04's that were made without it.
As for the feathering issue.... here's what they said:
"Sir, the 04 Z has a new suspension which corrects the feathering issue. As far as we are concerned we have done all that was required to prevent this issue from occuring."
To which I asked, "If that were true, why are there 04 owners who had their tires swapped by the dealer because of feathering?"
to which they replied, <pause> "It depends on how the driver drives the car. If you drive it very hard, the tires will wear out quicker."
Well, duh! Of course it's going to wear out quicker but it sure as hell shouldn't feather!
They said that there was only a few people, out of the vast amount of Z owners, who called to complain about the feathering, thus, the problem isn't as big as I am making it out to be. WTF?!??!
So I asked if we are basically on our own about this issue and they said, not for the first 12,000 miles because of the warranty. So folks, after that 12,000 miles, you are all S.O.L.!
I also asked if they knew what the cause of the problem was that they could 'correct' them in the 04 model, why don't they apply that fix to the 03? They said, well... we will cover them for the 12,000 miles and the various TSB's will resolve their issue for them.
I guess I'm walking on my deposit. Screw nissan. I'm done.
