old gas. if it stopped, dont worry about it, it is your car retarding the timing to prevent detonation. fill up with highest octane gas available to you.

i cranked it and it didnt sound like a spark knock sounded like a rod knock, but it was very low on gas and seemed to idle a little rough but stopped immediately and the noise got quieter then went away after about a minute

Most likely just the timing chain tensioner, took a little bit for it to get primed with oil.

yeah, sounds like a classic case of timing chain chatter. Although unacceptable it is quite common.

so think i should be worried or is there something i could replace to make it stop or is it just maybe because there was no oil in the top of the motor and it had to prime itself? i only have intake ,exhaust and throttle body spacer should i be worried about reliabilty with more mods? its got 75,000 miles and saw on another forum that a z motor threw a rod at 88,000 is this normal life of one of the vq's? ive never heard anything like it and my buddy said they were probably sprayin the **** out of it. all the feedback is appreciated

unless it is knocking when your driving i wouldn't worry about it. If it is timing chain chatter than there is nothing you can do about it "within reason" I'm sure theres a fix but it is not cost affective.

Indeed it is from the circulation of oil to the top of the motor on a cold start will be delayed just enough for the chain to rattle. I've notice it is pretty random and only occurs when it is really cold out or the car has been sitting for a couple of days. Mine has done it since '04 when i got the car and comes and goes with no noticeable negative outcomes.

A rod knock is louder than any type of engine knock...as in low octane fuel causing the engine to knock. It's more persistent. Try listening if the sound is coming from your block.
