i just recently purchased a 2004 350z- base model. At the dealership- the fuel level low light was on and the DTE was “- - -“ I just thought the car’s fuel was low. Of course the purchase was “as is” but after my purchase I had a 3 hour drive home so the first thing I did was hit the gas station and well- the fuel gauge didn’t work.
When I got home I cleaned the fuel level sending unit mechanism with a Q tip, re-installed everything and still nothing is reading on the gauge. I went ahead and bought a new fuel pump. I installed it yesterday and I’m still reading empty; I made sure the float wasn’t hung up on the wire in there too.
I’m not sure what to do now- any pointers are appreciated. I was thinking on grounding out the sensor wire and seeing if that did anything on the gauge but other than that not sure what to do. I have code P0461 too for the fuel level sensor “A”

Reason: Adding info
I really appreciate that- I will give it a try. I was thinking possible connection problem too; if that harness isn’t connected just right to the fuel pump, I noticed it cuts off. Think some dielectric grease would do the trick?
Dielectric grease will certainly help. Remember there are two fuel level sensors wired in series; one on the fuel pimp assembly and one on the other side of the tank behind the driver's seat.
I’d shake your hand if I could, thanks for that info! I didn’t realize there was another fuel level sensor located behind the drivers seat; definitely going to investigate that sensor. This is a completely new platform for me; I’ve had a 2001 Integra Type R for years and I finally wanted to get into a newer car. Thanks again and I’ll keep you posted!
Glad to help. You really need to get a copy of the Service Manual. Unfortunately the free downloads were pulled from the web. For model year 2004 Nissan published 2 manuals; MY2004 and MY2004.5. The later cars had several changes, most notably in the engine management area.
Just wanted to give a quick update. I managed to locate my problem. As soon as I took the subwoofer out and went to reach for the fuel sensor wires- I found they were both torn in half. I de-pinned the plug and ran two fresh wires and now I’m golden! Thanks again for your help telling me where that sensor was.

OP - hit me up if you want a link to a downloadable copy of the FSM. The link I found a while back is still active
