I am really sorry. Is it just at startup or all the time?

WTF? Are you certain the noise is coming from the front of the motor?

its only at startup after the car has sat for a couple hours or so. just for a split second. sounds exactly like a timing chain rattle like my g20 had when i would start it up.

i mean, its gotta be something oil pressure related if the noise goes away a second after i start it. then its perfectly fine. i can shut it off and start it back up and it wont make the noise. just after it has sat and cooled down.

my guess is the difference in chain slack due to me resurfacing the heads.........thats all i can think of.

well, i used the stethoscope hearing tool and stuck it on the tensioner cover and started the motor....heard some noise. this was before i left work.

just did it again a few minutes ago, but put it right above the bank1 ivt sprocket...heard some noise.

its quite hard to pinpoint the noise if its between a couple points of about 10"

gonna try the bank2 side in the morning to see if i hear something different.

Can you hear the stage2 cams quite a bit at idle? Or do they sound pretty smooth?

yesh i agree. valvetrain noise is a lil more noticeable with the cams compared to my stock motor but nothing that sounds like anything remotely bad/out of wack.

so i havent driven the car in the past 4 days cuz i was waiting on some parts to come in before i started tearing the timing cover off. and that is what i did today after work.

my first discovery when i dropped my lower oil pan was a tiny piece of what looks like a leg of an oil squirter oh well.....so i guess cp pistons still have somewhat of a clearance issue. and i know it was on the bank2 side that the notched areas were on the opposite side of the squirters. but everything turned over and sounded fine when i first put the bottom end together. idk.....again, oh well. not worried about that.

my second discovery when i got the front cover off was....everything looked fine. and then i noticed the bank1 secondary t-chain tensioner was pretty much dry. it wasnt gushing out oil when you pressed it in......the other 2 tensioners did. so there is a start. no oil pressure to the bank1 tensioner. and that is where i stopped for the day. disappointment. but ill get it figured out soon enough. gotta take the intake plenums off and the bank1 valve cover off, so i can pop the #1 cam cap off so i can take the tensioner off. i'll go ahead and replace that one again (being it was brand new) but there has to be a blockage in the oil galley somewhere unless it is in the tensioner itself. either way, will keep you guys updated.

Oh no, you think the oil squirter and no oil to the tensioner issues are related? I may need to call cosworth to make sure that's not an issue with their pistons. Was this something that CP has had problems with?

Sorry you are having problems. I don't know about CP but with the stroker crank the squirters are deleted. There is a flush fastener that goes in the block where the squirters went. I paid about 20 from BC for them but I bet you could get them cheaper from Mcmaster Carr which is where they came from.

A blockage is quite possible, I personally did not put any rtv on the cam block, but if any rtv gets in there and blocks it up it will do something like that. I had an intake cam gear go bad personally, but it was noisy all of the time until I replaced it. If you need a solenoid, I have a spare one. BUT a tuner can check to see if the cams are advancing with just revving it while hooked up to osirus, just fyi

that noise is from the VTC sprocket, just like you said you had on your G20.

My motor makes the same noise.

From what I've read, its just an annoyance, but whenever i get a refresh, I'll replace it.

Sorry to hear, but I think Classy is on to something for you to check. Mis-placed RTV can cause that, so check the front bearing block. Also, it wouldn't hurt to pull apart the two VTC solenoids and check them for RTV as well. I've noticed they tend to collect RTV, but they are easy enough to clean and clear out (Note I'm refering to the DE solenoids).
