Default For the guys who purchase gas in New Jersey

For you guys who buy gas in NJ...

State Cracks Down on Gas Stations For Price Discrepancies, Inaccurate Pumps
Friday, June 20, 2008 - Millennium Radio
As gas prices soar, you may not be getting what you pay for, even as you pay
more and more.
State authorities on Thursday announced 350 gas stations were fined out of
1,023 stations that were inspected during a recent three-day operation in
all 21 counties.
The most common violation (62) found by inspection teams was inaccurately
calibrated pumps which dispensed fewer gallons into a driver's tank than the
amount the customer paid for.
Weights and measures inspectors also discovered pricing discrepancies and
inaccurate octane ratings.
Sate Attorney General Anne Milgram calls the investigation "deeply
troubling," but conceded there is no way for a consumer to determine if he's
getting less gas than what his receipt shows.
"What they're going to have to know is that we're out there doing it for
them. To me, it is critically important the state and the counties play this
role," said Milgram at a press conference at a West Orange gas station.
She encouraged customers to get out of their cars when they get gas to make
sure they get the octane they requested and to verify if prices are properly
posted.
If you spot something wrong at a gas station, like the prices being changed
more than once per day, you are encouraged to call the state at
732-815-4840.

This should be moved to NE. But, yeah. JERSEY FTW.

I love this state, there's just too many people here for everyone to be honest. Thankfully, I don't get gas outside of my hometown, so this hasn't been a problem for me.

Good neither of my stations are there. Lots of south jersey places there had me worried. As long as I'm not paying for 93 and getting 87 I don't care.

To report a violation call: (732) 815-4840

I would try that number but i belive that is all that they found in the investigation. Most of them seemed to be in south jersey.

As far as Sussex county I don't have any information on that.

Personally i only buy from Sunoco on Route 38 and Hartford road 91 octane.

And here is a follow up. Not my information but a friends.

I don't know what you guys are paying for gasoline.... but here in California we are also paying higher, up to $3.50 per gallon. But my line of work is in petroleum for about 31 years now, so here are some tricks to get more for your money's worth on every gallon.

Here at the Kinder Morgan Pipeline where I work in San Jose , CA we deliver about 4 million gallons in a 24-hour period thru the pipeline. One day is diesel the next day is jet fuel, and gasoline, regular and premium grades. We have 34-storage tanks here with a total capacity of 16,800,000 gallons.

Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening....your gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products plays an important role.

A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.

When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode. If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3)stages: low, middle, and high. In slow mode you should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some other liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money.

One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is HALF FULL or HALF EMPTY. The reason for this is, the more gas you have in your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than you can imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation. Unlike service stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated so that every gallon is actually the exact amount.

Another reminder, if there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up--most likely the gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom. Hope this w ill help you get the most value for your money.

DO SHARE THESE TIPS WITH OTHERS!

WHERE TO BUY USA GAS, THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW. READ ON

Gas rationing in the 80's worked even though we grumbled about it. It might even be good for us! The Saudis are boycotting American goods. We should return the favor.

An interesting thought is to boycott their GAS.

Every time you fill up the car, you can avoid putting more money into the coffers of Saudi Arabia. Just buy from gas companies that don't import their oil from the Saudis.

Nothing is more frustrating than the feeling that every time I fill-up the tank, I am sending my money to people who are trying to kill me, my family, and my friends.

I thought it might be interesting for you to know which oil companies are the best to buy gas from and which major companies import Middle Eastern oil.
These companies import Middle Eastern oil:

Shell........................... 205,74 2,000 barrels

Chevron/Texaco......... 144,332,000 barrels

Exxon /Mobil............... 130,082,000 barrels

Marathon/Speedway... 117,740,000 barrels

Amoco........................ ....62,231,000 barrels

Citgo gas is from South America, from a Dictator who hates Americans. If you do the math at $30 /barrel, these imports amount to over $18 BILLION! (oil is now $90 - $100 a barrel

Here are some large companies that do not import Middle Eastern oil:

Sunoco..................0 barrels

Conoco...................0 barrels

Sinclair..................0 barrels

B P/Phillips............0 barrels

Hess......... .............0 barrels

ARC0....................0 barrels

If you go to Sunoco.com, you will get a list of the station locations near you.

All of this information is available from the Department of Energy and each is required to state where they get their oil and how much they are importing.

Citgo gas is from South America, from a Dictator who hates Americans. If you do the math at $30 /barrel, these imports amount to over $18 BILLION! (oil is now $90 - $100 a barrel

I checked yesterday and per barrel it was at 42$ ouch

blacksl3ek...
here's some information about the chain mail letter you reposted:

http://www.snopes.com/politics/gasoline/saudigas.asp

...most of the info is false or outdated. To quote the summary of the link

"what this scheme proposes is merely a symbolic solution rather than a practical one, because even if the USA stopped importing oil from the Middle East, other countries will still purchase it. (Japan alone, for example, generally buys as much or more oil from countries such as Saudi Arabia and Kuwait than the USA does.)

Complex problems rarely lend themselves to simple, painless answers. Simply shifting where we buy gasoline isn't nearly as good a solution as the much tougher choice of sharply curtailing the amount of gasoline we buy.

No, the first post with the list of gas stations in new jersey is accurate. The second email was from a different source. As far as the follow up post it is more a patriotic thing then an exact approximation of barrels shipped. My information is correct. There is nothing wrong with my post and the information is correct. Support your country. Happy early Fourth of July everyone.. And dammnit where is the Patriotism?!

I would bet that this exists in every state. These are primarily calibration issues with the pumps. Do you really believe this only exists here in NJ?

sorry I didn't mean the NJ gas stations were incorrect.. just the follow up chain mail post.

I just meant to bring up the point that most "boycott this or that" gas letters miss the point in that none of that will change our demand for oil. I love my gas powered Z just as much as the next guy so in way I suppose I'm a part of the problem too.

Also, as far as patriotism... boycotting gas companies as a whole could seriously affect those hard working American family's who work for the gas facilities/companies here in America trying to put food on their tables and make a comfortable life for their American children.

/rant

hope everyone had a fun 4th weekend! Go USA!!
