I just have a quick "gee whiz" question. I know the rev limiter is 6800, but why can you adjust the warning light to go all the way up to 8000? Is it just because.......a flaw.......... an over sight, or what? I noticed it today.

I dunno why, but its cool they did this, it works our good for my reflashed ecu, and for anybody that does valvetrain or headwork in the future to use.
Probably some people just don't ever want to see it, so they set your shift light to 8000, and they're set. I don't know if that's right, but it sounds good.
Yep, I think it even says something in the manual about "to disable the shift light, set it to 8000." It would start blinking at 7500, so you would never see it.
Exactly. The shift light blinks 500 prior to the set RPM, and goes solid at the set RPM. If you set the light to 8000, then it would start blinking at 7500, which you cannot reach because of the rev-limiter. Therefore the light is effectively disabled.
i think the main reason is the room for upgrade so you can still use the light with a reflashed ecu
I highly doubt it. Nissan engineered the car for safe operation. It wouldn't make sense for them to tailor the shift light programming to support something "aftermarket" that involved a) altering parameters in ECU software that has to be reverse-engineered behind Nissan's back in order to flash it in the first place, and b) changes the factory operating specs outside of Nissan's normal "safe" limits. I think allowing it to be set so high was just a cheap way of adding a disable feature without having to actually add specific logic to do so. It would be cool if that was the reasoning though. Maybe then they'd be more willing to 'open source' the ECU program for aftermarket modification in the first place.
yea, the reason is so that the light can be disabled. I guess I"m wondering what the point of that light is in the first place? After it comes on, that means you should shift?

Yeah, it's really meant as a driving aid. The RPMS spool alot faster in this car than in many others, so it's there as either a) a warning that you're coming up on (blinking) or have reached (steady) your shift point without you having to really focus on the tach, or b)if you choose to set it a little lower, it's a reminder to find that next gear (especially 6th) so you don't cruise around at higher RPMS than necessary.

Its a shift light, like a reminder. You dont have to shift, but you can. You can set it to whatever rpm you want, that way it will kind of alert you that your at the set rpm.
