Best synthetic motor oil?
So I've read some people believe that Mobil-1 is not the best synth, but is actually a class down from the top class. I've always regarded Mobil-1 as one of the top oils.
So, I'm wondering first, what do people consider to be the best synthetic motor oils? I'm not talking about favorite; I'm referring to the best quality.
Second, why is Mobil-1 a notch down from the best?
Finally, what's the best brand oil filter to use on an engine that likes to be driven fairly hard?

I have never heard that Mobil 1 is a step down. I have used it in my car since 3500 miles and now I have 28,000 miles. I change it every 3k still and I drive "fairly hard"...... You can use redline but at $7/qt instead of $4/qt, I'll stick w/ mobil

Just an fyi--Nissan recommends you wait until you have at least 10,000 miles before switching to synthetics because the rings need to seat properly. The oils are too thin to use during break in periods. I actually asked this question to several different dealers head mechanics, as well as non Nissan mechanics--all said the same thing.

Ive never heard of Neo but everything else on Mike's list Ive only heard good things about.
Myself, I think Mobil 1 is the best choice because it is easy to find and is fairly cheap with respect to the other oils in that list. Im sure the difference in performance of the oils is very small and not worth worring about.
And yes I drive hard. Ive had my SS Performance since May 1st and ive got nearly 7800 miles on it. I do 100 to 120 on the freeways going home at night almost regularly.

I have used both Mobil 1 and Castrol Syntec. Many years ago, when I was a Mobil 1 believer, it came out that they actually had very little "engineered" oil in their containers and most was carrier oil. That pissed me off and I switched to Castrol. Shortly thereafter, a standard for labelling was initiated that required them to distinguish between "full" sythetics and "blends". I have recently started using Amsoil, after reviewing many test results and feel that is a notch above both Mobil 1 and Castrol. Their gear lube is much better.
I considered Amsoil, Redline and Royal Purple and went with Amsoil.
As long as you do your oil changes at reasonable intervals, I'm not sure that any of these choices are bad.
I use a K&N HP-1008 oil filter.

Amen with Comatose! Motul is one of the best quality and most expensive oils out there. Haven't seen one in U.S., but in Korea and Japan, they are known as the top of the line engine oil. But I don't see the reason to get it $50 for a quart (stupid retailers put ridiculous profit on them), totalling $250 for a oil change for my Z while I can get Mobil1 synthetic for $20 for 5 quarts.
Oh, and how about Shell Helix? Haven't seen them in U.S., too but they are OEM oil for all Ferrari's (even Enzo, although Enzo's have specific engine oil only for them, like $70 a quart, and 12quart needed, totalling like...$840 well...it's Enzo, so who cares ). Anyone heard about them and used them?
