Is there any way to get better sound imaging while still using the stock grille?(aka without pods) I'm about to put some Focal 165VRs in my Z and i really would like to get them facing at an upwardsish angle instead of at the floor. I was thinking about trying a zenclosure type spacer but a little thicker mdf and angle one side a bit to get the speaker to aim up slightly. It works in my head but it would all depend on how much space i have between the speaker and the grille. Tilting the speaker slightly would make the front to back distance of the speaker greater so i would need enough space between the grille and the window essentially.
If i'm confusing anyone tell me and i'll draw a picture.
The other option which is slightly the same.. is to get some thicker uneven dowels and cut the ends at a small angle to create an angled seat for the speakers. (again, if confused i'll draw a picture)
The Focal 165VR is a 6.5" speaker with a installation diameter of 5.55" and a mounting depth of 2.20" if anyone is craftier than me and can figure this out.

Any updates on your install?

Just because it fits there does not mean it will sound good. You are still dealing with the issue of stock grille defusing half the sound. It not only blocks it but the sund wave bounces against the blocked section. Will you be able to make good sound? Maybe. However i still guarantee with pods your sound will be twice as good.

I did the same thing with my JL tweets at the factory location. I mounted them just like the Clarion tweets that came with the Bose system. The end result was that they sounded like absolute a$$ mounted behind the factory grills. I re-mounted them in the same spot by drilling out the trim and mounting the tweets in the cups that came with the speakers. This made them a) directional and b) 1,000,000% better sound-wise.

Infinity Kappa Perfect 6.1 fits with stock speaker ring by shaving a plastic fin off of the inside of the door panel.
The Infinity Perfect 6.1 tweeters are a perfect fit for sail inside or flush-mounting by using a 1.5" drill bit for flush-mounting.
I've also had Diamond Audio HEX S600 and they also fit perfectly with the same setup. The crossover is in the door panel as seen below (before completely touching up the install -- diamond crossovers fit in the same spot)
I used the stock molex for wiring to the speakers.

Re Audio XXX 6.5" mids DO NOT fit behind stock door panels. Magnet hits the window, if you space the speaker out far enough it is touching the backside of the door panel.

Phoenix Gold RSD65CS components only fit 08 with a 1.25" spacer. I bought the 1" MDF ones on ebay and epoxied a 1/4" sheet of luan, creating a 1.25" spacer. Even with that, some of the plastic on the back of the door panel needs to be trmmed. (06-08 doors are the same I think?)

oops.
Ok, I ordered a jl360.2 amp, door pods and Alpine SPR-13S components. My goof. They are 5.25. I meant to buy the 17s which are 6.5. I pretty much need to send these back I think.
Anyone agree with me? Now that I am sending them back...I wonder if I should just upgrade to a better quality of speaker (which to my noob *** just means more expensive) since I have recovered from spending the 2k on everything else. Or will 17s's sound ok with a 13tw5 on a jl500/1v2...I dunno.
Long story short, should I send the 5.25 speakers back or fit them somehow??

But yes, you want 6.5" speakers.

A simple answer
It seems like all you need to do is check the Top Mounting Depth to see if it will fit. I think we've collected enough data to say that anything greater than 2.63" (67mm) will not fit. Anything above 2.60" (66mm) should raise concern as these people stated it was a tight fit or had to do some shaving.
Here's some of the research:
Successful:
2.12" Diamond Audio S600S
2.20" Focal 165 VRS
2.32" Alpine SPR-17S
2.38" Boston Acoustic Pro 6.5
2.44" Rainbow SLC 265.25 NG
2.48" DLS UP6i
2.50" Pioneer TS-D720C
2.56" Polk SR6500
2.60" RF Punch P162S
2.62" Infinity Kappa Perfect 6.1
2.62" Polk MM 6501
2.63" Hertz HSK-163
Failures:
2.64" DLS MS6A
2.75" RE AUDIO RE6.5-COMP
2.87" Phoenix Gold RSD65CS
3.03" Focal 165 K2P
3.87" RE Audio XXX 6.5"
