I am dropping the car off for it's cage on the 14th. I have gotten all sound deadening out and I am almost done with the wiring. I gutted the headlights and painted the inside of them. Removed wing and splitter. Removed stock steering wheel and installed my new Sparco wheel with QR. I am going to weigh it one more time before I take it to get the cage. I am thinking it will be around 2840. Check out the madness of wiring in the pics...
I am getting

Kind of funny following this thread; because it parallels my build.
I just finished gutting the headlights last weekend. Saves a chunk of weight.
I hope you can start it once you've finished all the wiring. I couldn't start mine for a month after I gutted the dash and started pulling stuff. Took a while to find the problem but it's all good now. That said I'll save the hard core wire reducing program until next year.
Good luck with your build. It's fun watching the progress.

Thanks! Good luck with yours.
I finished all the wiring last night. Taped it up and tied it all back in. I was very nervous to start it. I was worried I ripped something out I shouldn't have even though I traced every wire. I had to put a tender on the battery since the car has been sitting for awhile. Car started up no problem with no warning lights or any issues. I was so happy!
I finished the extent of all my weight removal too. I weighed the car today and I was very happy. 2790lbs with half tank of fuel. That is right where I wanted it to be. The cage should be about 100-110 so it will be 2910 after. With me in it, it will be around 3060. That's what I was shooting for my comp weight to be. Next winter, I can get CF hood and hatch w/lexan to save some more weight. You got any pics???
Here is another pic of my headlights. I painted the inside of them so they won't chip like my chipped to hell bumper. The car is dirty as hell, but you get the idea.

I don't know how much the carbon doors weigh. Even though my doors are gutted they are still really heavy. I took one off to do some wiring and it was way heavier than I thought it was going to be. I would say around 45lbs. I was surprised they were that heavy because there is nothing in them at all, but the latch and door lock. I would think the carbon doors would be a huge weight savings. I may consider doing this in the future.

I am not sure to be honest. I can assure you though that every bit of weight removal I did was very tedious.
I would say with with wiring and headlights my guess would be about 15lbs or so.
Maybe next winter I will do the CF hatch/lexan and CF hood to save some more weight.

You may want to check this post at the SG blog about their carbon fibre hatch and wing:
http://www.sg-motorsport.com/?p=889
When I was there I picked up the OEM hatch and was shocked at how much it weighed. Sasha gutted the carbon fibre hatch to just the shell so he had to build additional support for the wing. The install looked very nice.
Being cheap I'll probably just gut the OEM hatch on my car. Cut away everything but the shell and install lexan and hood pins.

Here's a few pics from the headlight weight reduction program:
I used a bathroom scale, so not the most accurate, but it said 14lbs for the pair. After gutting I estimate, I didn't weight them
, that they weigh about 3lbs each.
Used a Dremel to cut everything away. I couldn't pop the covers off because they use sealant. The Dremel was my only option and this mod is a one way trip.
The lights are structural and support the bumper and fender so you have to leave some structure. I went matte black and sprayed the outside to reduce the sheen.

Nice man! Looks good. I did the exact same thing with my headlights. I just used my dremel and cut everything out from the back. I did not want to mess with trying to pull the cover off and heating the sealant to do so.
About the hatch. I've already cut a little bit of it out. I think I may do the same thing you're doing and cut out as much of the inside as I can. I have heard from other guys on here that switching to a CF hatch and lexan is a 50lbs weight savings. I would like to get more weight off the front of the car first though.
Good luck with the rest of your build!
I'll put some more pics up soon before I take it to get the cage and then after.

Hope to see you too. I rarely see any Z's on track. Are you going to be doing HPDE? Are you going to the first event in April?

Just got back into town from dropping the car off today at McMahan in Akron for the cage. He said he is backed up a little, but should get to it in a couple weeks. He was really happy to see how gutted my car was. He said that will make his job a lot easier. Now to play the waiting game.
Also, weighed the car one more time. It was 2785lbs. I removed a few more small things last weekend. I will weigh it again once it gets back to find out exactly how much the cage added. Since the car is under 3000lbs, I was able to go with the smaller tubing. I believe it was 1.75x0.9. Getting NASCAR door bars too.

I'm so jealous of that weight! There aren't many people with Zs that have such low weight and those that do have gotten rid of pretty much everything.
We need a list of weight reduction mods one can do (I know there are already threads on this, but a comprehensive list from a single member that others can follow would be nice).. *hint hint*

I'm sure I could come up with something. It depends how far people are willing to go though. I removed all the wiring in the doors for the electronic door locks and power mirrors. Some people may want to keep that. I wanted to remove all the metal behind the seats that is spot welded to the car, but it really looks like it adds some rigidity. I bet that is a good 30lbs if you were to remove it. I'll put something together soon.

he said that the metal piece behind the seats weighs around 50lbs. He also removed the rear brace and made a custom brace. That thread might give you some more ideas on reducing the weight even more.
Side note- I should be out at putnam park in may. The question is wether or not I'm driving in the hpde event or not.

I have read through that one before. There definitely is a lot of weight to be saved back there. I don't think I want to remove all that though. It just looks like it adds so much rigidity to the car. Who knows, I may end up doing it later.
