Default How much beating can the VQ take??

Just wondering how much beating the N/A VQ engine can take before seeing any problems i do occansionally do some road racing and drag racing. How stout and strong is the VQ motor.

The tranny will probably die before the motor if you drive it hard and shift well. The rev limiter prevents us from seriously hurting it too. If you mis shift a lot and over or under rev down and up shift then the engine will take a serious beating over time. With your bolt on mods make sure you're not going lean otherwise a piston will por or a rod will give up. Do log scans when you hit the track.

Do you have a whistling in your exhaust like I do? It suppose to have technology like the Tornado.

my dyno showed that i was running rich after 4700rpm you can definately see that im running rich by the black soot on my exhaust tips.

i don't hear any whistling from my pe exhaust. Try checking for exhaust leaks.

Not according to this guy:

j/k, we still don't know how it blew up though.

Nissan runs brutal tortune test on these motors, at their proving grounds in Japan. I doubt you could seriously damage the motor, as long as proper cooling, oiling, and driving techniques are imployed.

With F/I...its a whole different ballgame.

I have probably 4000-5000 track miles on my car, no problems with the motor whatsoever.

No motor problems... JUST A CRAPY TRANSMISSION!!! Sometimes it works really well but when you want to get down and drag race it sucks.. road racing it is nice because rev matchin feels really good on this car.

I had about 16k on with 100 1/4 miles slips, 100+ 0-60 runs, 2 autocross and 13 track days when the motor hatched. Still don't know what caused the failure. But I have to assume the beating I gave it was part of it.

VQ crankshafts are a weak point in these motors, they are no where near as stout as the VG30 it replaced. The VG30DE and VG30DETT could spin at 7-8K RPM all day, but if i did that to the VQ35 it would just blow up, VQ35's cant rev as high, and doesnt take as much abuse as the original VG's... i'm kinda disappointed really, i been working on Z's for a long time and i know the flaws in both motors.

Nissan's always had crappy transmissions, nothing new, my Z32 also had a crappy tranny as well, on Z32 its always the 3rd,4th gear syncro, the tranny never really blow up tho.

yea but still, if you have been taking care of the motor and keep it under the redline, it should not have happened, do that to a SR20, it'll still last you 100K miles

speaking of trans, I have noticed the supercharger sound on my 6MT has been more and more obvious, it doesn't bother me that much since the car is still under warranty, but I have read some where it's an indication the trans is about to go, is this correct? My car only has 2,500 miles... plus every time when I shut the engine down I get a weird sound, "ch ch ch..." somethign spinning comes to a stop, the belts are on tight, the A/C works fine... the tech over at infiniti thought I was out of my mine when I told him over the phone.

can some one please shine some lights on these issues? THX

Nothing bad about the transmissions.....beat this.

My wife drives in the auto mode. I tried to explain to her about the auto/manual mode, ie push up to upgear, down to downgear. Well, she pushed it up, in the automode with the button pushed in.....she went from about 50 to park in about 3seconds flat. The engine stopped (no harm to it), I recranked it expecting the worse, and it ran smooth as could be. I have put 6000 miles on it since then, and drag it on the weekends, and have NO PROBLEMS. Looks like a good transmission to me (and a bad wife)

The transmission is made to protect itself from situations like this... although it is still not a good idea to do such a thing because park is a gear that operates mechanically, unlike the other gears that uses computer control and engages precisely at certain speeds and RPM when you downshift or change gears “manually” on an automatic or automanual mode.

I have 170,000 miles on my VQ30, probably 400 1/4 mile passes and many autocrosses, rev it to 7200 rpm everyday, with 55whp over stock N/A. I think the engine is plenty tough, its the crappy ecu in the 350z that causes a problem for you guys. I have never seen a crankshaft break on any VQ30 engine, the rods are usually the first to go, upwards of 500whp. I think it must be the ecu and tuning causing all the problems with the VQ35, cause the VQ30 is a rock solid engine.
