Well, I am glad to say I just joined this 4.083-club. I echo what the others have said. This is a good upgrade. What you'll loose on the top-end is not earth shattering, but I sure'd like to increase my top end to gain what I lost. In short I encourage this mod for any one having double thoughts about them.

Thanks to Adam@Z1Performance for hooking me up with the gears, the Carbonetic LSD, and the NISMO clutch!

The base model has no limited slip at all right?

If that is the case, I would want to put some kind of limited slip in with the 4.08 gears. The mechanical advantage of the 4.08 gears will generate more power and increase your ability to spin the tires. I would want to have some sort of LSD to make sure that the increased acceleration was going to go to both of the wheels.

The quaife is certainly the cream of the LSD units. I considered getting one, but with the stub axles it was a lot more expensive than the Carbonetics for me. You won't have to buy stub axles with a Base, so it will be a bit more cost effective for you.

I got mine from Adam, too... Carbonetics diff and 4.08 gears is a great combo...

Just make sure you break the diff in correctly and change the fluid as often as required.

I'd personally be more interested in a 3.9 because my highway mileage sucks enough as it is, not looking to buy anytime "soon." But end of the summer should have a little liquidity to play with.
highway mileage on a Z running properly should be in the mid 20's at worst. I got 28 mpg on my fully built car on a 4 hour drive to MD last weekend, with 3.9's for example. As for stock, we bring them in from time to time, based on demand

@80 I get 24.5. The HR is really a gas hog compared with the DE, and I didn't anticipate it as EPA mileage didn't drop for the early 07's, just 08's.

Not that I can't afford an extra 2 mpg of gas, but I'm not going to be benefiting to that extent.

I'll send you an e-mail when I'm looking to do this, and availability will probably decide the gearing.

the HR essentially the exact same mileage (rated by epa) than the DE did. HR is rated at 20/27, my 04 by comparison, was rated at 20/26 IIRC

No, the 2008 is rated at 17/24. You are under the same false impression I was when I purchased my car.

Trust me, real world city driving I get 18, if I shift at 2k and drive slow as ***** I get 20 city, not realistic or worth it.

Highway I get 27 at 50, I get 24-25 at 80. Again, not worth it.

2007 = 2008 mechanically, therefor I am assuming Nissan just posted the DE test results as HR test results because they are DEFINITELY wrong.

I've tried driving easier and I just don't get the EPA ranges, I could fine in my last car - so I know its not driving style.

Hey guys, I have been researching this gear swap as I have a Vortech and it might help me stay in it's powerband. I have an 03 touring and can't seem to find a difinitive answer as to if it comes stock with a 3.3 or a 3.5 gear? Thanks in advance.

i believe the 6mt is 3.5 stock and the autos are the one with the 3.3.

I just bought the 4.08 pumpkin from Z_ology and he sent Mobil 1 LS 75W-90 synthetic gear oil (thanks again!). Anybody use this gear oil for the differential? Manual says 80W90. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Also Z_ology your inbox is full...

I've read through the majority of this thread now, and I have one question that I'm trying to find a good answer for. I'm looking at a Nismo LSD w/3.9 FD for my 07 base model. Is the dealership the best place to get this installed? I tend to not like going to dealerships, but no one in my area seems to be able to tell me where I can go and get this done. Getting the LSD on the car is no problem, but it seems putting the 3.9 FD to the LSD is something most places can't/won't do. I know I've read a few people saying they went to the dealership in this thread though, so if that's the only option, I guess I'll go up there when I get this.

If there is a 4X4 shop around, they should be able to help. They deal with LSD's all day long. The Nismo and Kaaz (and probably others) look like they came out of a Jeep.
