Official STS Rear Mount Turbo Discussion Thread
im actually doing an lq4/9 build on my g soon and going with an 88mm turbo... i heard bad things about the hinson stuff not fitting correctly so i talked to a local shop that specialize in ls motors and they want to do the build really bad... just waiting on some more cash

The mechanics of the sway are relatively easy but the electrical is the rub. Did they comment on that?
Mass flow is related to engine RPM and engine load.
more air flow means more fuel which means more exhaust gas which will increase spool

The tune was pretty good.....IMO WOT on a big track for 20 to 30 mins straight is what did it in. Car has 73k on it and numerous days at the track. I will be selling the full STS kit soon as I am going forward with my LS2 build.
Finally finished installing the kit. All the exhaust pipes are wrapped, testpipes were added as well as a magnaflow muffler, and a new clutch/lighter flywheel. I am not scheduled for a tune until next week but I wanted to make sure everything was at least working right and could hold boost. The car started up fine, but after it warmed up the idle became very choppy almost stalling. When taking a cruise, the car would stall when I would put it into neutral. A bit scary. I still need to do an idle air relearn and then I'll have my tuner bump up the idle, which will hopefully solve this issue.
The car had trouble building any type of boost in 1st and 2nd gear. I was afraid to boost it in any of the higher gears and kept rpms under 5k. The car was idled for 10 minutes and driven around the block to warm everything up. I then gave it half throttle around 3200 rpm and let off at around 4500-5000 rpm in 2nd gear and was unable to build any boost. I could hear very faintly the turbo trying to spool and when I let off, there was a very faint chirp from the bov. The sounds were very faint and almost barely audible. I did this a few more times with the same results: no boost. Boost gauge slowly crept to slightly under 0 vacuum. So then I tried going full throttle starting at the same rpm and letting off at the same rpms in 2nd gear as well. Once again, turbo spool sounded very weak and faint. I did get a very slow build to 1 psi before I let off at 5k rpms. The psi build was slow. I'm not sure if it would have continued to build more boost if I had kept the rpms going. The bov sound was a bit more audible and cleaner sounding this time.
So is this normal? It feels like the motor is unable to build boost. I have an Hallman mbc installed but it is closed shut... so I should be getting 4.5 psi off the wastegate. I've read that you guys that are tuned for 8 psi only get around 5 psi or so in 1st and 2nd gears... so I assume that getting only 1-2psi is normal when running off of the wastegate? I expected the turbo spool and bov sounds would be more audible though. I do not suspect I have any leaks, as I was very meticulous with all the work (took me over 2 weeks to install). All exhaust gaskets are brand new and I even applied a thin layer of copper gasket to them. In any case, I will be doing a boost leak test to make sure. I do not think I'll push the motor anymore until I get it tuned, but I hope my time at the dyno will not be spent trying to figure out why the car can't build boost.

I was hoping a good mbc would solve the lag issues, but I had no idea the lag would be this bad. I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and get the ebc. Might as well do it now so I don't have to retune in the future. Besides the solid boost in 1st and 2nd, does the ebc help the spool up times much?
yes because with an ebc you can connect to the top port on the wg and it will put air in there and helps keep closed a little longer... thats waste gate duty cycle.. what kind of boost are you trying to run? you can get a bigger wastegate spring which will also help spool
Alright looks like I'll be ordering the HKS evc VI tonight and selling my mbc on ebay...lol. I don't plan on boosting anymore than 8.5 psi. I'd be happy to put down 380 whp after the tune, which I think is achievable with the testpipes and spacer. So if I am tuned for 8.5 psi and want to turn the boost down during daily driving to 6 psi, will I have to get it tuned for the lower boost also?
boozt, sorry to hear about what happened. I havent been online because of work so I missed a month of drama here. You are probably the one that really drive his car to its potential on this thread. I know you have lots of track miles on that car. Economy is a little tough so good luck.
update...
After fixing my vacuum leak about a month ago, my car felt like new again and no CEL for about a month now and idle and AF has been stable again.

Thanks...I feel like a traitor looking to swap for a 2JZ or LS2 (2JZ is looking better at this point) but it's a matter of budget vs HP and trackable gains. I can stay within my budget and get 500 to 600 HP out of the 2JZ swap and run the hell out of it without significant worries. If I blow the 2JZ motor...I can get a full motor that will handle big HP for $1700.00...they are plentiful. I have high praise for the STS kit....it never failed me...the stock block did. I have big $$$$$ into this car so it makes no sense to dump it....and will prob be a full time track car in 2 years.
