Default VDC light and SLIP light

While driving.. usually on the freeway.. they randomly come on and stay lit.

searched a little and its just the 2 lights and no brake light.

seems like it may be worn brakes? but brakes seem fine.

i think my alighment is off.. could that be a reason why?
help plz thanks!

yup its because of alignment, if steering wheel is off more than 5 degrees it will throw those lights

I’m sure you have checked this, but just to be sure:

1) Tire sizes?
2) Condition of tires?

Wow, I'd say that's the one-in-a-million possibility. 5º off? I think he'd notice that much.

I'd go with Spike's guesses first - tire sizes, worn pair of tires. Then I'd check brakes fluid and brake pads.

Same thing happened to me. brakes were worn. The lights turned on a week before the brakes started squealing though. Lights were gone after it was changed

I respectfully question your statement. I have a 2003 Performance model (and thus VDC). I carelessly hit a high curb directly, and doing that destroyed the alignment (along with a significant rash on my right front wheel).

However, even with this gross misalignment (I drove the car a couple of days after hitting the curb before having it aligned back to spec), I never experienced any problem with VDC.

Based upon my experience, I doubt that alignment is the causing the OP’s problem. Of course I’m basing my comment on personal experience (one instance on one car) and someone else may provide a different experience.

Actually, he's talking about the misalignment of steering wheel and front wheels - as measured by the steering angle sensor. If the computer thinks the steering wheel is turned and it's not really, that can trigger VDC. I believe, as you do, that OP meant suspension alignment (camber/caster/toe) which couldn't be that far out of alignment as to trigger a VDC problem.

But that happens when applying the brakes? …Right… Wrong?

The OP (tw8715) states: ”While driving.. usually on the freeway.. they randomly come on and stay lit.”

He doesn’t mention the event is concurrent with applying the brakes.

I've pushed my brake replacement (even to the "squeal"), but that did not affect my car's VDC.

Ohh… I understand now. For sure if your steering is misaligned with the direction your wheels are pointing, that would certainly cause the problem you describe. After all, VDC is all about maintaining the steering direction with the same direction the wheels point.

I haven’t heard about anyone with that problem though. Was your car in an accident or did you replace some steering/suspension components recently?

Please let us know how this is repaired since it will be a good learning experience.

I'd be willing to bet the front tires are taller than the rears. OP post your tire sizes.

I just had my lights come on! I tried all the normal fix's Alignment, Steering Angle reset, Brake fluid, brakes, etc...no of that was the problem...me and a friend who owns his own shop did a deep look and we were getting the error code 1142 Steering Angle Sensor...we couldn't look deep enough so i took it to the dealer and that was the same thing they found they said there was no communication coming from the sensor! basically this meant I needed a new Steering angle sensor...these are about $500 plus install which shoul donly be about an hours labor...I'm just awaiting for th part to arrive then i'm going to put it in the car and hopefully that is it done and fixed...

I've got a similar thing happening now. I get VDC intervention in right hand sweepers on trailing throttle. If I get on the gas, it stops. Never happens in left turns. Never happens in low speed turns even at fairly high g loads. Just 50-60 mph right hand sweepers off the gas. The VDC light goes out as soon as the VDC stops. So what do I do? Rear sensor, steering angle sensor?

I've had the same exact problem. Although when you VISUALLY inspect the brake fluid level it looks fine however that can be the cause of your problem. I remember I kept saying to myself my brake fluid is fine but someone from this forum told me to top it off with extra fluid all the way up to the top, I tried it out and problem went away. So buy some brake fluid and top it off and see if that solves your problem.
