Nothing new here but a slightly more sober viewpoint (that goes right along with the original pragmatic (pessimistic? Haha!) premise of this thread)...
Interesting article, Mic- talk about speculation! But examining this ongoing topic against the economic background of the pandemic really throws it into another light. Nissan--like most car companies--is hemorrhaging cash during the shutdown--and desperately needs to hit the road running when life resume. It's not hard to think of several vehicles in the Nissan lineup that could pay immediate dividends with a redesign, starting with the Rogue. The Z was speculated to be among the last of the redesigned models, but who knows when the money runs out on this current effort to refresh the lineup?

Your comment goes right along with this line from the article:
"that does not necessarily mean a new Z car will ultimately land on the market, especially if brass decide that such a car works against their efforts to cultivate a green, environmentally responsible image"
If this is the case of what Nissan wants (or needs) to do, then THIS is the "green and fun" car they should have developed to sell to the enthusiast market:
OK, sure, many of the readers of this thread are shaking their heads over an eVehicle. And I should be right there with ya... after all, I grew with small block V8s (and rats) whose goal was to make 1 horsepower per cubic inch along with the associated noises internal combustion engines make that is music to the enthusiast ear. But lawdy lawdy, electric is no slouch. I didn't believe it either until just a few years ago when I drove the Tesla Model S P85D that scared the cr*p out of me! Since then, I've still not pulled the trigger on a 100% e-car but admit it's not "if" but "when".
(noting two things: this is seven years old and then there's the young Lewis Hamilton at the wheel... laff....)
Yeah, yeah, the Leaf RC in the vid is set up as a "race car" but then, Nismo's products mostly started on the track too and if the last seven years had been used to develop a proper street "Leaf Nismo", who's to say where we'd be today?
Nissan Chief Operating Officer Ashwani Gupta talks about multiple changes going on at the company. Yes, he talks about "multiple new products" meant to revitalize the lineup, but no specifics on a new Z. There are no guarantees despite media speculation. My best guess is that a new Z35 prototype might appear on the Nissan stand at the Tokyo Auto Show this fall. While international autoshows in general have lost much of their luster, it seems Nissan has received good value/exposure over the years debuting new products at the TAS.
Good find, Jim and probably the best preview of a new Z yet. Besides the S30 like front end, it looks like the hood has the type of bulge needed to package an engine like the VR30DTT properly. Also, the overall profile shows how a Z32 rear styling might be included in the design. Let the speculation proceed!
Here's the pictures from the video. (the 240z is there to compare)
I can definitely see the 300zx and 240z in the back. I'm hoping the tail lights aren't too out of place.
Not sure about the 240z headlights everyone was talking about, but then again you can't really see them all that well.
The silhouette has some major queues from the 240z,300zx, and 370z. Also hoping the interior is something that is not forgotten.
Once again, I'm so excited to see Nissan release actual footage of the new Z.

Reason: Added reason for 240z picture
Well, well, looks like my people in the design department finally listened to me. Never mind that I had to scream at them in Japanese through my interpreter dkmura. Hahahahahaha.
Looks good, but still waiting for them to begin accepting deposits before getting too excited. Good catch, Jim!
Finally!
Although I still own my 280Z and 350Z, have been racing on Coyotes since 2012 waiting for a new Z.
Seems to keep the current Z proportion with a 240Z front, 300ZX rear and should have a VR30DDTT. Juts need at least 450 BHP to go head to head with the Supra Bimmer real power figures and a modern interior with nicer materials.
I'll get a 3rd Z for sure....
I really like the new look. I hope they stay close to that. Even though Nissan is bleeding money at the moment, it looks like they have a decent long term strategy to recover. I'm glad they're closing plants and making less cars and focusing on quality. Sad to see the GT-R go into history, but maybe this will help the new Z.
I wasn't supposed to let the cat out of the bag but they knew exactly who to give it to for a discrete marketing leak.
Don't tell anyone where you got this.
Thanks god the concept never looks like what rolls off the production floor...if it reboot looks like this, I'm selling anything and everything Nissan I own and buying a 3valve V6 mustang
