This is the proper way VERY good way to chose bearing sizes. I'm willing to bet whoever put the motor together did not do this OR did it wrong.

I disagree. That stuff is garbage and no serious engine builder should rely on it. A bore gauge and micrometer is the only way to get accurate clearance specs for sizing bearings.

Thank you for saying that.

Plastigauge can be used as a double check but I would never put an engine together without measuring with a micrometer/caliper.

That was the way it was done back in the old days of building motors...............but not today and you are way off posting that.

But the clearance will change once the girdle is on. So I agree that it is best to use both.

I'm going to use both methods.

Picked up all my FAIL from Justice today (another 5hrs and tank of gas). The block, pistons, turbos and oil pump are done. Its like groundhog day... I've already started cocktail hour to wash away the pain. Luckily the heads and cams survived this time.

I'm considering several options at this point based on money, downtime and effort. I have decided that the "blank check" portion of this build is over.

I have purchased a longblock and am in the process of trying to get a leakdown and compression test shortly with the engine out of the car to see if it is usable in its current state. I am considering scooping up a set of the original APS GT2871R BB turbos to use as drop-in replacements and just running ~400whp for the rest of the season on the stock block. Then building the other block and turbos on the side and making a transfer next spring.

What happens is all determined by $$$$ vs time right now. The other issue I will have is that I want to freshen up many of the nuts and bolts in the kit before putting it back on in any form, and with APS basically providing zero support I will have to spend some time sourcing the pieces I need to find

Still considering parting out everything I have and buying another car completely as well.

Damn Chris, at this point in time, I would step away from this project. This car has been nothing but a money pit and you have had little to no(not enough) time enjoying it. If I were in your shoes, I would stongley consider an LS swap and have upwards of 500+whp NA or the skys the limit if you chose to go FI with it. Best of luck to you brother and hope all works out in the end whatever you do

-Chris

With all due respect, that's like opening a whole new can of worms

A money pit is a money pit. Maybe with that route, he can get more than 3k out of his motor before he is forced to tear down and rebuild

Jeez thats a tough call. buying everything again, wow speechless.

i think i'd just put it back to stock, sell the Head games head/cams and go with a different car. Nows the time to step up to a 370Z and basically run the same power you were on a untouched stock motor.

The amount of work to go back to stock is probably never gonna be worth it though. I dont even know if I could get the G back to enough stock to sell it.
Running the turbo kit on the stock block probably isnt that bad of an idea. I dont think i'd buy a new set of turbos though, if you plan on rebuilding your current ones.. That would just be double spending in the long run.

make sure to put a filter on the turbo oil feed line this time as well

Same as the other 4... massive oil starvation

After seeing the HR stock block lay it down at the airstrip, this is tempting, but most likely not cost effective. For the money involved I have another option with much more upside.

The amount of work to go back to stock is probably never gonna be worth it though. I dont even know if I could get the G back to enough stock to sell it.
IF, I part out, I will part out every piece of sheetmetal, interior plastic and nut and bolt I can, the haul it off to have it crushed and bring a small piece back to sit on my desk as a paperweight. Putting it back to stock isn't an option I'm really considering.

make sure to put a filter on the turbo oil feed line this time as well
- the new turbos are cheaper than fixing the old ones, plus that way I have a spare set when I blow the next motor

I'll be around in a few weeks Barn, I'm going on vacation for a while first. I will miss the Hill's open house too, otherwise I would have still come down without the car.

we should all start a fund for Chris. If all the members following this thread and version 1-5 of his past ones put in like $10, he could have the car up in running before the first sign of snow. I've met Chris and he was honestly a real cool guy.

Chris maybe you have a paypal account you'd be willing to share or start a new one for donations?

Or we could all just support him by buying his products.

Chris how much for shipping? have you thought about it? I bet a lot of people on here would be willing to send a few bucks your way to pick up some food.

Chris,
Depending on which road you go...if you choose a rebuild....I highly recommend NOT using ANY shop you have used up to this point again. The list of common things in your builds is getting smaller and smaller. I wouldn't have given nearly as much loyalty as you have.

GL with whatever you plan to do.....now go enjoy the vaca.
