My alignment has not been checked. I'm going to schedule my service where I plan on getting quite a few things addressed such as:
- Window Grease
- Alignment
- Clutch Noise
- Service Engine Soon (Appeared two nights ago)

The question is what seems to be the best method of addressing the issues. Talking to the dealer first then opening a case with NNA, or opening a case with NNA then going to the dealer.

As to the alignment specs... has anyone with the Service Manual posted the published specs. I'm looking for a scan or screen shot of the page so I can take it to the dealer, vs. an idiot mechanic pulling the incorrect specs.

I got one for you...I went to pick up my car today after they replaced my two front tires due to the feathering. Well, from inside the service area I see my car parked out there. A few seconds later I look again and something struck me as odd. I walk out to see my Z rolling backwards down the sloped drive with no one in it. The dumbass mechanic didn't put it in gear and also didn't set the parking break fully. The saving grace was the slope was very short so luckily it did't drift right into a new set of Maxima's. You could only imagine the cussing and commotion I raised. This opened the flood gates as I proceed to rip my service mananger a new one. I will be following up with the service manager in the morning (he was already gone) and then will immediately follow-up with the GM of the dealership after that. This is unacceptable!

I've stayed away from bad mouthing my dealership in the past and I will say my sales experience was great, but NEVER deal with Bankston Nissan of Dallas service department!

Today

1) My hearing on lemon laws complainted is scheduled for late May.

2) I got my car back with new front tires. Boy, does that make a difference! Quiet, smooth ride....

3) Bad news is that after the tire swap and alignment my tires were already starting to feather on the inside, 1/32th difference between front and rear of tire tread stub (not side to side) on inside row only.

Nissan North America pays the dealership for only one alignment, my has had three or four and these are a loss for the dealership. So dealership may hessitate.

Service advisor called NNA to inform them of tire feathering after 15/1600 miles, mostly highway miles. They called back and gave him new and different alignment specs! This may be why dealerships show different specs, NNA may be testing out different settings. The following are my specs, in degrees including toe settings (yes, normally toe settings are in inches or mm). My copy of print out shows all settings in degrees!

front left
caster 7.5 to 8.9 before 8.1 after 8.1
camber -1.3 to -0.1 -0.9 -0.9
toe 0.0 to 0.04 0.0 0.05

rear
camber -2.0 to -1.0 -1.6 -1.8
toe 0.02 to 0.05 0.1 0.05

front right
caster 7.5 to 8.9 before 8.1 after 8.1
camber -1.3 to -0.1 -1.0 -0.9
toe 0.0 to 0.04 0.1 0.05

rear
camber -2.0 to -1.0 -2.0 -2.1
toe 0.02 to 0.05 -0.05 0.05

total toe front 0.10 rear 0.10

I read somewhere in one post that highway miles may contribute to feathering problem, the current mileage has been on highway 100 and 200 miles at a clip without stopping. I also noticed that at highway speeds the tires bounced (detected the sound of) like going over highway joints but car was not porpoising!

On a side note, one of the old tires required 8 half oz weigths at a single point! This amount followed the tire when it was swapped.

On the lemon law front, Tx DoT MVD does not accept testimony except in person so if I want to show this problem is not an isolated incident I may need bodies to show up. May be with a date set NNA may work on this problem to resolve the problem before the hearing date.

Then may be we will make lemonade! For now I'll enjoy the quiet smooth ride and not mind as much when I have to clean those grease marks.

The specs I posted in a previous message in this thread ARE from the service manual!

Just a thought for everyone that is experiencing the tire issues.....if Nissan is not doing anything about this I would think that this would actually result in unsafe conditions for those owners who don't understand feathering. You could report the problem to the Consumer Products Safety Commission (actually it is the Dept.of Transportation)
http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/

On the website
http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/complain/

you can not only file a complaint, you can search to see if others have reported issues. I did a search and found 4 complaints (5 counting mine). One appeared to have been repeated 2x. So that amounts to 4 total complaints.

If they are going to do something about this, defintely need more people to file complaints.

Default specs on the alignment

I think the problem with the ongoing discussion of the correct toe specs is this: Toe-in should be read in mm or inches. The nominal toe-in spec is .04in PER TIRE for a total toe of .08. Some people on this thread are getting degrees mixed up with the correct measurement of the 350z toe which should be in mm or inches. In addition, if the tech involved in doing your alignment hasn't downloaded the new specs for the Z all measurements on the computer will show in degrees. One of my techs was unable to do the conversion from degrees to inches so I DIDN'T LET HIM TOUCH IT.
I got the specs straight from the dealer who read them off to me.
They were the exact specs Mannishboy posted earlier. BTW, I have feathering on inside and out. The toe alignment is right. I HAVE NO BOUNCING PROBLEM. It could be as simple as these tires
suck. I have checked what comparable cars are using (porshe boxster, infiniti G35) they are using michelin pilot sport tires.

Default Tires Feathering and Cupping is Unsafe!

I further that proposition. Do report your issue to the National Highway Traffic Safty Administration. 1-888-927-4236 or go to www.nhtsa.dot.gov/hotline.

HOW CAN YOUR CALL MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

* The toll-free DOT Auto Safety Hotline is your chance to help identify safety
problems in motor vehicles, tires and automotive equipment such as child
safety seats, or get safety information.

* The Hotline is run by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an
agency of the U.S. Department of Transportation.

* Your call or electronic submissions help lead to recalls.
You provide the first information we use to identify safety problems.

* We review your complaint and compare it to other complaints. If a trend
develops, it prompts us to open an investigation.

* We also let the manufacturer know about your complaint and sometimes
that leads to a settlement for you.

* If a safety-related defect exists in a motor vehicle or item of motor vehicle
equipment, the manufacturer has to fix it at no cost to the owner. We use
the information from your calls and WWW form submissions to get the
process started.

Unhappy 2500 miles and feathered

Mine are feather pretty badly and I have mostly Highway miles. I have low speed brake grinding and rubbing sound on sharp low speed turns. I also have the grease streaks on the windows.

I have an appointment to have the car looked at tomorrow at Courtesy in Richardson(Dallas). I will let everyone know all the details as soon as I get them.

I have always been told never to buy the first year of a new car design. I always thought that CAD got rid of this pearl of advice. Oh well. It also sucks that I didn't know Nissan was owned by frenchies until a week after I bought it.

This is page 1 of the TSB. The rest of pages simply describe how to properly align and rotate the tires with the pressure sensors.

If the dealership doesn't entitle free alignments like my dealership (NIssan in Wichita, KS. sucks!) will they have to honor a free alignment under this TSB?? Oh and by the way still stuck with Feathered tires here and still PISSED!.. Nissan North America, still has yet to fix it.

Make a copy of the TSB, call NNA and then take the TSB to your dealer and don't pay for an alignment, the dealership gets paid for at least one and your feathered tires are part of the TSB. If your dealer balks, call NNA back and they will tell the dealer they'll pay for it. Call NNA every day, several times a day until you talk to a rep, ask for Steve Lam. DO IT!

Default Service

Ok. I'm scheduled to take my vehicle in for service next week. Plan on having them address all these wonderful problems... window grease, clutch noise, early morning clunk, and especially the feathering. I posted this question before, but didn't get an answer....

Should I go to the dealer first with my complaints, or open a case with NNA first? I'm interested in knowing what protocol works better.

PLEASE ADVISE

Thanks!

Perfect! I wonder when Nissan's Japanese Management can take over the company's reins again and Renault can provide TA and get their share of the profits. The push for new models is fierce at the moment and Nissan has a forward plan and the means to implement it. Carlos Ghosn did a lot for the company, but how much longer is he needed?

Default due process,.....

Well, here is my update. The last phase of tire replacement for me has been complete. But now the car pulls to the right and they cute the rims on both fronts down to the metal. I guess I will be getting a new set of wheels also! Now my next concern is how long does it take to get the tires and rims in after they order them? I would also like to take one of the scratched rims and use it for a spare!! But, will it fit in the spare compartment? Anyway, when they do the tire flip, tell them to be careful not to cute the rim like they did mine! my wheels look like I hit a curb or something. Just be sure to check your wheels before you leave the shop after they flip the tires. Good luck to everyone!!! OH and by the way, The steve guy at NCS seems to be very helpful!

P.S. - Will anyone be going to the car show in Lebanon, TN?
