What do you think of the performance of the Michelin pilot all season tires ? The A/S have a`400 tread wear compared to 140 on the OE summer time Bridgstones.
They are much harder so they will not wear as fast. It should take twice as long for the feathering and cupping to return.
NNA just installed them on our car,I will give you my honest opinion but I want to hear from others who have gotten this tire installed.

I am extremely pleased with their performance after 5500 miles, including the last 1500 miles on my trip. They perform better than the 040s in all categories except turnin feel. I don't mean they can't hustle you around a corner faster than the OE 040s, they can, but the feel is not quite as precise. Also, I was running 33psi cold, not 35 like Nissan recommends for the OE tires. I think if you were wanting more on the edge feel at turnin, I would pump them up to 35 psi or higher for canyon runs and other vigorous driving and the feel would be very close to summer tire performance over the road. No all season tire will stick as well, but I think their performance would be very close.

I think you will like them and I expect to get 25-30,000 miles out of them easily, maybe more and they have NO SIGN of cupping on the inside or out on my car. Remember, I shucked the OE040s at 1600 miles when there was only a slightly dark shadow warning me about the alignment being out My toe, front and rear, was so far out, it was unbelieveable. You should get a lot more mileage out of them than the 040s, but I don't know how much, it depends on how badly your suspension has been damaged or worn, if you prefer. Good luck and tell us how they are doing every 5-6000 miles or less and make sure your alignment is as close to specs as you can get it when you have them mounted.

Nissan just provided me with four new Michelin Pilot Sport A/S. Although it is too early to tell how they are going to wear, my first impression is "Damn they're ugly!".

Well, It has finally happened....

I noticed the tire roar this morning on the way to work. When I got out to inspect the tires there was significant feathering. I inspected the tires at 10,000 miles and they were fine, so it has just recently developed. I am very disapointed with the way Nissan is "handling" the situation. It seems as though the tire company is blaming the car manufacturer, and the car manufacturer is blaming the tire company. All the while the consumer is screwed. I'm not sure what my Nissan dealership will do with my feathered tires at 15K. Hopefully something.

My status :

I visited Nissan at 8310 miles on July 18, 2003. They stated the feathering was sooo bad the TSB would not help, and ordered new tires.

Called today 10/03/2003, no tires. Rep states Nissan might have cancelled orders. NNA wants the cars in to perform alignment per new specs. I stated the tires are still hosed. He said we should do the alignment, then tell Nissan to send tires and they will. So I am going Monday AM to do this.

Will keep you posted.

The Michelelins have a more aggressive looking tread pattern and seem to fill up the wheel wells more than the Bridgestones. It's a subtle difference but I think it detracts from the overall appearance of the car.

took my car in around 11,000 for the dealership to confirm the problem still exists and they said they orderd the tires and they should be here in a week. but i told them that they are on national back order and the service guy said no.

went today to get my tires put on and GUESS WHAT, they're a different style bridgestone and the service manager said they were on back order.....DUH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

is there any way i could call NNA and have them get me Michelin's or something? even if i paid the difference. has anybody been successful receiving different tires? i mean, i could be w/o tires for another 5,000 miles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My dealer got my a set of S03 Pole Positions at no cost to me. (A FRONT set, not all four.) Took about a week to get the tires. They work GREAT. They are a bit more aggressive, and after my alignment and new S03's I now have almost 7000 miles on this set with no feathering. (The original feathering showed up at 4500)

Did you get an early alignment? What psi did you put in the tires?

So I took my car in yesterday for the first service and the feathering and the pulling to the right issue. Here are the numbers for the alignment.

Left front before. Right Front Before

Min Nom Max Actual Min Nom Max Actual x
Camber -1.33 -0.58 0.17 1.0 -1.33 -0.58 0.17 0.8

toe 0.00 0.02 0.04 0.32 0.00 0.02 0.04 -0.26

Actual Min Nom Max

Cross Camber 0.3 -0.75 0.0 0.75

total toe 0.06 0.0 0.04 0.08

Set Back .27

Left Front after Right front after
Min Nom Max Actual Min Nom Max Actual
Camber -1.33 -0.58 0.17 -0.6 -1.33 -0.58 0.17 -0.8

toe 0.00 0.02 0.04 0.02 0.0 0.02 0.04 0.02

Actual Min Nom Max

Cross Camber 0.2 -0.75 0.0 0.75
total toe 0.04 0.0 0.04 0.08
Set Back 0.09

Can someone please let me know if these readings were way off in alignment terms. I am calling Nissan Monday and I would like to have a little info on this.

Thanks Guys.

Default Bad Design

Some people here might remember me... I had a Z on order last year, but backed out of the deal a year ago because I read so many complaints about the tire wear. At that time, a lot of people ridiculed me for my decision. A couple of comments:

1. The problem is not going to be easily corrected. It is possible
that no combination of tire selection and/or alignment specs
will correct it. (If there were an easy fix, Nissan would have
corrected it by now.)

2. Stop believing the lies that your dealership manager and/or
Nissan rep are telling you! What a bunch of suckers.

3. You're not going to get free tires forever, nor are you going to
get anywhere with legal suits.

4. Told ya so. I'm getting an 04 Subaru WRX STI. I'll look for
you in my rear view mirror.

Angry Toe is not the problem

My total toe is now .08 as of 7/17/03

This is supposedly the latest toe spec. that Nissan is trying on cars with cupping.

BOOMER,

I did what you said and called 1-800-NISSAN-1 to file a complaint. The customer service rep that helped me also owns a 350z. He even told me on the phone that the swapping of the tires from side to side doesn't work. He called the service manager of my dealership and set an appointment up for me to verify tire feathering and get new tires.
Once I got to the dealership the service advisor said they had to do what the TSB said first which is swap the front tires from left to right and do an alignment. I was like dude you told me and the customer service rep even told me that it doesn't help solve the problem. He said that's what the service manager ordered them to do. He said once we do that and if it still doesn't work, call 1-800-NISSAN-1 to complain again and get new tires. This was a waste of my time. Now I know why people go postal. I was so pissed I almost pulled out my GLOCK and unloaded the clip in the service bay.
I pick up my Z today from the dealership, and the service advisor said the TSB was complete and the roaring noise is now at a minimal. I take my Z out for a spin and its true the roaring is at a lower tone, not as loud as before. Will the roaring noise come back louder? I still demand new tires! The other thing is the car was fine driving at high speeds 70 mph and higher, but now cruising 70 and up the road noise is louder from the tires. Is it just me or have you guys had this experience? I have kept my composure over this issue, now its time for me to cuss someone out.
What's my next step? Anyone, anyone???

Want-a-Z,

I feel ya man! The 350z is a very awesome looking car, but its not worth keeping her if she's going to be in the shop all the time for warranty work.

Slaponte,

The dealership might turn you away since you have Eibach springs installed. You should put your stock springs back on first. There is a guy here in Houston who got hosed because he also had lowering springs and they used that excuse for the cause of the feathering.

I would call the same rep back at Nissan, report your continued dissatisfaction and tell the dealership you have contacted them because the swap didn't work. Only Nissan can order new tires, keep after the rep you talked to and have him call your dealer.

Hello...I am relatively new to this topic ...my z car with 14000 km on it recently developed a loud roaring noise from the front end at low speeds. The dealership has suggested a realignment and front tire swap....Is this a legit way to fix the problem...please advise

Not as far as I'm concerned, had that done at 8000 miles. All I got out of it was a 4 wheel alignment and tires with feathering on the outside (feathering on inside before swap) and feathering again on the inside with 18000 miles on car. I see it as a design problem and Nissan is not addressing it in a professional manner. All they have a cheap fixes.
